Wissahickon Cross - C2Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, October 24, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Howe Repeats and Jacques-Maynes scores bigBy Tammy Ebersole The 2004 Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series wrapped up a UCI double weekend yesterday with a stop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for Wissahickon Cross. The Belmont Plateau in the city's Fairmount Park section is a perfect location for a cross race and always draws large crowds of riders and spectators. This year's edition of Wissahickon Cross proved no exception as 253 riders came to do battle. Not only were they drawn by the promise of a good course, they were also drawn by the fact that Club Wissahickon had put up a prize list worth over $2800 dollars. The fact that it was widely distributed across all categories gave everyone a little extra incentive. The first long and seemingly never-ending climb of the course took an early toll in the Elite Women's race. By the top of the climb a select group had formed that contained Christine Vardaros (Velo Bella), teammate and winner of the previous day's Granogue race, Barbara Howe, Sinead Fitzgibbon (Aquafina/CRCA), Anna Milkowski (Rona) and Mackenzie Dickey (Team Bicycle Alley). Behind them the majority of the field had already fragmented into pieces. Howe took early command of the lead group and immediately ramped up the pace. Milkowski and Dickey matched her acceleration and three pulled away from Fitzgibbon and Vardaros. Vardaros then suffered a mechanical that ended Team Velo Bella's attempt at capturing the top two podium spots as they had done the day before. With Howe driving the pace, lap after lap, Milkowski started to struggle and eventually lost contact with Howe and Dickey. Dickey hung tough but she too popped off Howe's wheel after another lap at blistering speed. Behind the battle for the top three spots, a rider was methodically working her way up through the field. Tara Parsons (Aquafina/CRCA) must have turned on the jets for the second half of the race because she came from nowhere up to fourth position behind Milkowski. While she was moving up through the field, Parsons passed by two riders now waging a vicious battle for fifth. Cross neophyte, Melissa Maurer (Evolution Racing) and Betsy Schauer (Fort/GPOA) were in a close fight for fifth that they would take all the way to the line.
With Howe clear and charging for home to wrap up her second win in two days, Milkowski turned her focus to Dickey and started to slowly close the gap. Milkowski managed to make contact with one lap to go but she spent too much energy in the effort as Dickey managed to outsprint her to the line to claim second place behind Howe. Milkowski picked up her second third place finish in two days. Parsons put in impressive ride to solo in for fourth. Maurer held off a hard-charging Schauer for fifth. Maurer's fifth place also gave her the win in the Womens 35+ category. The climb that decimated the women's field also thinned out the Elite Men's field. Leading the field up the climb on lap one was Ryan Trebon (Kona), followed closely by Mark McCormack (Clif Bar/Colavita Olive Oil); the winner of Saturday's Granogue race, Barry Wicks (Kona), and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Sierra Nevada Cycling). Behind the group, Jesse Anthony (Cyclocrossworld.com) was trying to hold position and he was being marked by Matt White (NCC/Bikereg.com). As the group started pulling away from the rest of the field, Trebon suddenly looked to be struggling then lost contact completely. Trebon, apparently a little under the weather, started fading badly and eventually withdrew from the race. With the lead group established, McCormack, Wicks and Jacques-Maynes were glued to each other for the first half of the race. White caught Anthony and the two U-23 riders started an intense battle for fourth. With five to go, Wicks was setting the pace for the front three and the duo of White and Anthony was being reeled in by Jackson Stewart (Clif Bar Cyclocross). With four to go the front three were still intact but there was now a second group of three as Stewart had joined the two U-23 riders. All through lap four, Jacques-Maynes appeared to be testing McCormack and Wicks by throwing in attack after attack. Over the barriers he got a small gap and hit the fast downhill section a second or two ahead of McCormack and Wicks. Jacques-Maynes held the small gap all the way to the road, still held it at the top of the climb and then launched another attack in the section headed towards the slight uphill to the start/finish line. Wicks couldn't respond and when McCormack realized the move was going to stick, he immediately jumped across to Jacques- Maynes' wheel, leaving Wicks in his wake. McCormack went to the front and took over pace-setting duties from Jacques-Maynes. The gap between the leaders and Wicks quickly opened up to ten seconds. With one lap to go, Jacques-Maynes attacked again, hit the barriers first and got another gap on McCormack as McCormack was forced to deal with the traffic of a few lapped riders over the barriers. As Jacques-Maynes blasted down the descent to the road, he appeared to have a lead of twenty yards. He continued to give it all he had down the descent, determined to hit the road section before McCormack. McCormack was hot on his trail and the crowd was getting set for a classic battle to the finish line. Suddenly shouts rang out that McCormack had crashed and indeed he had. Coming over the final drop off to the road, his front tire rolled and he went down hard. With McCormack on the ground, Jacques-Maynes took off and had victory in his sight. McCormack was able to get back up and continue but the damage was done. Jacques-Maynes soloed across the line to claim a well earned victory. McCormack crossed the line thirty -two seconds back and Wicks crossed another seven seconds back to wrap up third. Anthony, who had been relentlessly throwing attack after attack, broke free of White to score fourth place. White finished fifth and Stewart picked up sixth. Other winners of the day include Charles Marzot (Corner Cycle Cycling Club) in the Juniors 17-18 class, Michael Garretson (Yellow Breeches Racing) in the Juniors 10-16 class, Eric Schlauch (Somerset Wheelmen) in the Masters 35+ category, Chris Long (Independent Fabrications) in the Mens 45+ category , Joseph Ruggery (Freddie Fu) in the B Mens category, Lynda Moldanaldo (Amoroso's/Victory Brewing/Tri State Velo) in the B Womens field, Nina Santiago (Liberty Cycle) in the Juniors Womens race and Tunner Johnson (Fort/GPOA) in the Men's C Class. Racing action continues for the Verge Mid-Atlantic Series on November 6, 2004 with the Westra/Lower Allen Classic (UCI C.2) in Camp Hill, PA. PhotographyImages by Dennis L. Smith
