Mid-Atlantic 'crossers turned out in force for the second running of Blue Diamond Park 'Cross. Rain on Friday made the technical course even more treacherous so good bike handling skills and a high level of concentration were the requirements of the day. The Elite Women's race started with a multi-rider pile-up in one of the muddy turns that caused the field to basically split in two. The lead group contained eventual winner Amber Itle (Yellow Breeches Racing), Melanie Swartz (Squadra Coppi), Betsy Schauer (Fort/GPOA), Caroline Hacker (Evolution Racing) and teammates Josie Shew and Lisa Vible (First State Velo Sport). The technical nature of the course worked in Itle's favor as she took the lead and started to put time between herself and the rest of the leaders. Itle's ability to ride a section that the rest of the field had to run only helped her widen the gap. Behind her Swartz and Schauer battled for second with Schauer overtaking Swartz on the final lap. Shew also got past Hacker late in the race to claim fourth and fifth, respectively. Bill Elliston (TSG racing) got the hole shot in the Elite Men's start but was soon overtaken by a group of five that contained Mike Yozell (Fort/GPOA), Joe Reynolds (Wissahickon), Kris Auer (Alan Mid-Atlantic), Ryan Leech (Fort/GPOA) and U23 rider, Greg Wittwer (Cyclocrossworld.com). As the five leaders started putting time on the field, last year's second place finisher, Greg Marini (Bike Doctor) worked his way up to within a few seconds of the group. Marini was unable to make contact and continued to hover just off the back. Eventually Leech launched an attack that the other four could not answer, pulled away and never looked back. Leech crossed the line first, repeating his win of 2003. Unlike his win last year when he beat Marini in a close sprint, this year he soloed across the line. Reynolds, Auer, Wittwer and Yozell continued to ride together until late in the race when Yozell lost contact with the other three. Auer beat Reynolds and Wittwer to the line to claim third. Reynolds took third and Wittwer fourth. Yozell rounded out the top five.
