Washington State Cyclocross Championships

Washington State, November 21, 2004

A record turnout of 431 racers competed for the coveted bronze, silver and gold hardware that adorns Washington State Champions on Sunday November 21. Clear skies, dry conditions on the turf and pavement, and clay like mud in two notable areas were the conditions on a new course designed by Cycle University professors Craig Undem and Matthew Hill. This totally flat course, a new venue for the Emerald City Series, also featured 2 barrier sections, and a "natural" triple barrier of big lumber that many riders chose to run. The course required riders to display technical skills in equal parts to their fitness to win in Seattle's Magnuson Park.

In the Elite Men's race, Beneroya Research's Russell Stevenson worked with two other riders, University of Washington's Galen Erickson, and Recycled Cycles Troy Heiticher, to power away from the field early. This power trio quickly distanced themselves from the field, and it was Galen Erickson who was first to be peeled from the experienced and smooth Stevenson's wheel midway through the race. Heiticher remained tenacious, staying with Stevenson throughout, until, with 2 laps remaining, Stevenson pulled away on the pavement. He flew into the grassy corners, putting it all together with unmatchable skill and speed, and forcing Heiticher to time trail in, nearly 30 seconds behind, for the Silver Medal.

The race of the day was the Masters Elite A field, where a seven man battle played itself out till the last lap, with many of the early contenders, notably "Big Daddy" Jim Brown of Kona and Randy Iddings of Redline, suffering mechanicals in the tough out and back section of mud and hidden rocks. The day also experienced record numbers of spectators; above 500 for the day, making this the biggest race in the Seattle area since the National Championships in 1996. We look forward to returning here next year and making this a traditional course for Northwest racers looking for speed and skills as they peak for Nationals in a few weeks.
