Applegates prevents Fuji SE sweep prevented by Applegate, Series Finals heat up!

A fresh Andy Applegate (CCA/Kona) was able to break up the Fuji SE sweep, finishing 3rd in the 6th race of the NC Cyclocross Series. Applegate seems to be on track to peak for the Master's Nationals in Portland this month. Daniel Daub (Fuji SE) took the win, with teammate Charlie Storm (Fuji SE) finishing second. With only one race remaining in the series, the battle for the top spot in the series will come down to the finale. Currently, Doub is leading Storm by 24 points, but the final race is worth double points. If Storm can win the race, he, at the best, will tie for the series lead. Doub must finish second in order to share that spot. Storm has bested Doub in two of the five races they have competed in. At this juncture, it would appear that the Fuji SE squad has sewn up the top three spots, but solid performances by John Degele (Cycling Spoken Here) has put him in a good position if major problems plaque Charles Pendry (Fuji SE).

Candice Blickem (Genesis Scuba) sailed to another victory in the Women's A race, winning the series whether she decides to race on December 7th or not. Cara McCauley (ABRC) finished second with Daniele Staskal (Donut Boy) finishing third. Staskal looks to have wrapped up second in the series, with three riders, Billington (Fuji/Diet Cheerwine), McCauley, and Lozano (River City), battling it out for third.

In other races of the day, your humble scribe was finally able to put together a good effort with a mechanical-free race to finish in the top 5 in the Men's Killer "B" race. It was a good birthday present! The race was won by Kenneth Borgeson (GVC), followed by James Badia (Spin Cycle) and David Goodwin. Borgeson, who leads the series, put a few more points on Goodwin.

The Master's 35 race was won by Derek Powers (Doughnut Boy) who put on an impressive performance, with Michael Ventola (Sandhills) and Jimmy Bruner (Cycling Spoken Here) finishing second and third, respectively. Bruner has put together consistent performances throughout the season, and should have second place in the series when the last wheel crosses next weekend. Barring problems, Powers should roll in for an easy series title. In the Master's 45 race, Arthur Reaves (OLP Racing) came through with a much-needed win, putting him back into the lead for the series. Todd Thorton (All-Star) came through with the best race of his season finishing second. Third place went to Dale Bryant (Sandhills). The battle for the series will be the closest of all the races, with all three top riders having a shot at the title (Ammon, Reaves, and Shields - Carolina Masters).

In the Women's B race, Sarah Worthington (Doughnut Boy) sported her brand new cyclocross bike. Worthington elected to continue the "B" series in order to get a shot at the series title. Laura Bowles of Fuji/Diet Cheerwine took second and Sarah Alholm (USAF) finished third. At the start of today's race, only one point separated Worthington and Alholm for the series lead. A 5-point difference remains between the two young women.

Chris Ramm (Paceline) took out his aggression on the men's C Class, riding away to an easy victory. Adam Hall took second and Abram Wordward (VA Tech) took third. Ramm's victory put him within striking distance of the series title, with Dave Standridge (Cross Creek) holding about a 13-point margin.

The juniors had four racers start. In order, Jared Cakebread (Hampton), Andrew Harrison, Alex Ryan, and Kenny Blackburn (Hearts). Kenny Blackburn should easily win the series title.
