Results & reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Michigan Cyclocross Series #5Bloomer Park, Rochester Hills, Michigan, November 16, 2003After a two week break, the 2003 Michigan Cyclocross Series resumed with what some considered to be a perfect day for 'cross. Racers were greeted with densely grey skies and a misty air to go along with the 46 degree temperatures. What appeared to be a scene from a Belgian Super Prestige, turned out to be a great day of racing. Elite WomenThe Elite Women took to the course for their High Noon start when the course was only slightly slippery. Anne Schwartz walked away from the field to virtually lock up the 2003 Elite Women's overall title. Anne finished more than three minutes ahead of her nearest competitor. Barring major catastrophe or injury, Anne will cruise into the State Championship in Yellow to take the overall title. Elite MenThe Elite Men were greeted with drastic changes in the course in just one hour's time. The mist had turned to full on rain and after two previous races, the course was getting chewed up. What was once a bit slippery was now just downright greasy. It proved to be a day for the all around 'crosser and it showed in the results as the guys with the most skills took the top placings. Jon Card (Tailwind.net/Cane Creek) took the holeshot with Jer Walker (Tailwind.net/Cane Creek), Jeff Weinert (Tailwind.net/Cane Creek), Nate Griffith (Ford/Giant Bikes) hot on his tail. Newcomer Ryan Myers (Meijer) made the trip from Indiana to dice it up and was in the thick of the action along with Toney Bruley (Suburban Homes). The course was more technical in nature, especially with the rain and grease everywhere. This favored Weinert's small stature and punchy race style. Weinert took the helm and drove the pace. Card and Walker followed, but Walker soon had to pull back if he was going to stay upright. Griffith and Myers both mounted efforts to bridge, but Weinert was just having too much fun slipping and sliding away from the field. A crash would soon claim Griffith and Myers forced Walker to push it. Just behind, Bruley was having a good day and was looking to bridge up. Around the midway point, Card had to throttle back after several crashes. It was later revealed that he had made a poor choice in tire pressure and was running too high. Unable to stay with Weinert he fell back. Seeing this, Walker got on it to Bridge to Card, dropping Myers in the process. Once to Card, the two teammates rode together for almost the rest of the race. With 2 and a half to go, Card stacked it on one the barriers. Walker attacked, but couldn't make it stick. Just before they were about to receive the bell, Walker dumped it on a sharp paved corner. Card took his opportunity and punched it. Walker rebounded quickly, but a bent derailleur hanger was impeding his progress. He made it to the pit to take a fresh bike and was on a mad dash to catch Card. Weinert took the win with a minute's advantage while Card held off the charging Walker by just three seconds to take second and hold on to the leader's jersey. Myers held on for fourth while Bruley stayed strong and held off a chase group to take fifth. The series continues on November 30 with the sixth stop on the circuit at Hudson Mills Metro Park.
