Coleman Rain and mud set the theme for round 7 of The Microsoft Emerald City Cyclocross Series at South SeaTac Park this Sunday. Racers and spectators alike were welcomed back to racing in Seattle with an epic November deluge that turned a traditionally dry, dusty course into thick-as-peanut butter, drive train destroying mud. The muddy conditions complimented the already challenging course that favored powerful riders, such as Kona's Ann and Dale Knapp. After a brief sabbatical from local racing, both of these NW cyclocross stars presented die hard cross fans with stellar performances! Despite the wind, rain, and mud, a few hard-core fans remained throughout the day to enjoy the warm food and beverages in what has become a traditional spectator friendly cyclocross arena. Watching the noon time kid's race, or winning a six-pack of Red Hook seasonal ale in the raffle was enough to make you forget about those wet socks, even if only for a moment. Race day sponsor REI was also present to thank the top 10 volunteers that make the series possible with a $100 REI gift card - and they say cycling doesn't pay. JuniorsExcitement in the Junior categories is certain to continue through to the end of the last race. In the Junior D category, it was another repeat finish with Ethan Mair across the line in first place, and JD Fette in a close second. Mair and Fette will start the next race tied for the series leader position. Paul Sales finished strong in third place, holding on to his third place overall position. At the top of the Junior C category was Evan Schmidt with his second win of the season, putting him into fifth place overall. In a close second and third place it was Noah Buckley and Benny Swedberg respectively. Breaking the tie for first place, Noah moves ahead by a mere five points into the overall leader's position. Just 2 Junior B racers braved the elements to race today. Joey Rogerson and Nathan Bannerman finished first and second respectively. Both of these riders have a strong grasp on the first and second overall positions, illustrating the importance of coming to all of the races! At the top of the Junior A category, it was Collin Carbaush with his 4th win of the season. Devin Anderson finished second, allowing him to hold onto the series leader position, and Luke Brechward finished third, also holding onto third place overall. WomenThe finishes at the top of the women's C field shows how quickly points can change hands, and also show the value of consistently showing up to series races. Sarah Miller finished with her first win in her second race of the season. MJ Redman, also with her best finish of a very consistent season finished second, moving her into first place overall. Alynda Boursaw (UW Husky Racing) finished in a very strong third place, good enough to move her into third place overall. Women's B series leader, Danielle Crandall, finished with her second win of the season, not too far in front of series rookie Christine Pachero, who finished second in her first race of the season. In third place, it was Kristen Smith, another consistently strong series finisher. She will also hold onto her second place position in the series. In the Elite women's field, Ann Knapp (Kona) was first of the line like a cannon shot, and didn't stop to look back until she completely dropped her competitors after only one lap! Soon she started to pick her way through the Master's B field, which started 30 seconds in front of her. By the end of the race, Knapp finished in 4th place with the Master B men, and in first place for the elite women - a full three minutes in front of second place finisher and Canadian national cyclocross champion, Wendy Simms (Speed Cycles). Series leader, Ingrid Spies (ReCycled Cycles) was strong enough to hold on for third, keeping her series leader position in tact by 5 points over Kristi Berg. Once again, the battle for the series will come down to the last race. MenJames Johnson cleaned up in the mud today, finishing strong in his second win of the season. Series leader, David Schmidt finished in a close second, keeping a tight grip on those leaders points. In third place it was James Birkenbuel - but he had to fight for it with Chris "Dobie" Dobrick hot on his tail, and almost taking him at the line. Dobie would have to settle for 4th place, despite his strong performance at the beginning of the race, and will hold onto his second place overall position. In the master B field, it was Mike Hays across the line for his 4th win of the season. Close behind in second and third place, it was Dave Karman and David Cook respectively. Coming on strong at the end of the season, Kyle Felmley walked away with his second consecutive will of the season in the killer B's field. Felmley moves up to 5th place overall, and is well within reach of a top three season finish, pending next weeks results. In second and third place it was series leader Troy White, and Galen Erickson respectively. In the Master B field, it would be Norman Thibault across the line for his first win in his second race of the season. Joe Sales finished in a strong second after missing last week's race, and David Sullivan finished in third place, holding onto his extremely muddy third place series position. In the master A field, it was a tight race for all of the top ten finishers. Top Philips slaged through the mud stronger than the rest to finish with his second consecutive first place finish, climbing into sixth place overall. Chad Berg was close behind in second, and will hold on to his position as series leader. Phil Oppenheimer crossed the line in third, moving him into third place overall. Nothing like the return of Kona's Dale Knapp to his Northwest stomping grounds to throw the spank down on the competition! Knapp has been racing in the New England area for three weeks, and returned this week to put a stop to Russell Stevenson' s (Bianchi) spectacular winning streak. Stevenson was the first off the line, but only held that position before Knapp took control of the train halfway through the first lap. Knapp made his move, and soared off the front - powering through the thick slop and making the infamous "Thigh Master" run-up look suspiciously flat. The fast pace set by Knapp caused the entire field to string out, and the conditions prevented a successful chase group from organizing. Knapp finished close to a minute and a half over second place Troy Heithecker (ReCycled) who was unable to shake Eric Atwood for the entire race. Atwood would have to settle for third place in a dramatic and sloppy sprint finish. Stevenson drifted all the way back to finish in place, but it would be good enough to hold onto his second place overall position. PhotographyImages by Hyun Lee
