North Carolina Cyclocross Series #3

Boone, NC, November 9, 2003

By Line Dempsey

Charlie Storm of Fuji SE broke the legs of all competitors with an outstanding performance at the third race in the NC Cyclocross Series. After the first lap, Storm began a rampage that left everyone in the wake, increasing his lead to upwards of 40 seconds over last week’s winner, and fellow teammate, Dan Doub. Doub also showed his prowess, exhibiting a similar lead over last year’s Master’s 35 National Silver Medallist, Andy Applegate, riding for Carolina Cyclocross Association.

During the first lap, Fuji SE rider, Charlie Pendry ran into troubles when he flatted a front tire three-quarters of the way through the course. It occurred in the creek crossing, that became deeper and more treacherous as the day continued. A slow wheel change in the pit dropped Pendry outside of the top 10 but he fought back, showing an impressive run at returning to the top 5.

All but four riders were lapped by the aggressive Storm, who had all intentions of showing everyone why he won the NC Series last year. Technically, Charlie Pendry, who finished in fifth place, could be considered lapped, as he once again flatted on his next to last lap. Storm crossed the finish line just as Pendry began his Bell lap. Pendry asked me if he needed to continue, and I told him to keep digging. Had he been able to reel in John Degele, of Cycling Spoken Here, who had passed him during his second flat, it would have landed the Fuji rider in fourth position.

In the reoccurring struggle between DeFeet racer Michael Scholtz and Cycling Spoken Here rider, Rob Moran, today proved to be just as exciting as the last two. The tenacious Moran attacked Scholtz through the feed zone opening up a 10 second margin. Scholtz had difficulty finding the right gear throughout the race and was not able to respond.

Once again, the three Fuji SE riders made evident their attack on the NC Series with all three riders in the top 5.
