For the first time this season, cold temperatures and damp conditions blanketed the course creating a slick, muddy 1.2 mile circuit. Despite the challenging conditions, Wilkins along with teammate Darin Schlake and rival team members Jay Thomas and Tyler Carmichael (LBC/Highgear) powered away from the 14-rider "A" field early on in the 60-minute contest. With five laps remaining, Carmichael lost contact with the lead group and was joined by Team Kaos rider Joe McWilliams who spent the whole of the day looking to bridge a stubborn 15 second lead. Sensing the Kaos teammates were waiting for their man to come across, Thomas dropped a late race attack eliminating any more Kaos riders joining their group. While the trio of Wilkins, Schlake and Thomas prepared for their showdown in the final three laps, the second group on the road held their own battle for the last prize money spot and maximum points in the Pedro's points competition. As the six rider group, including Chad Carpenter (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth), Paul Chapman (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth), Mark Savery (Footloose & Fancy), Jim Winklepleck, Matt Tillinghast (LBC/Highgear) and Corey Godfrey (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth) approached the single LBC/Sandhills Publishing barrier near the wash pit Carpenter and Tillinghast bumped hard and went down. Taking advantage of the mishap, Chapman opened an immediate gap of 10 seconds with Savery trailing closely. Entering the final lap, Wilkins launched a searing attack gapping his teammate, Schlake and forcing the hand of Thomas, who simply could not match the acceleration. The victory bumps Wilkins back into third place overall in the Pedro's points competition with 21 points, one behind teammate Joe McWilliams and eight back of leader, Darin Schlake. For Thomas, the third place finish vaults him into fourth place overall with 14 points. The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues Sunday, November 16, 2003 at Mahoney Park in Lincoln.
