Results & reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews North Carolina Cyclocross series #7Hendersonville, NC, December 7, 2003A final of numbers, Storm takes the win and the seriesBy Line Dempsey of www.fastcoaching.com The last day of the NC "regular" season was just as exciting as a series final should be. A Fuji SE sweep was eminent, but the top two positions were a toss-up. Upon the finish of the penultimate race, Daniel Doub led Charlie Storm by a mere 24 points, a deficit that could easily be made up by a first place finish by Storm thanks to double points for the last race. Storm spoke with me before the start of the race, saying that it would be a good race. He and Dan would fight it out, with one of them being the victor. Fight they would, as the pair attacked each other more relentlessly than Ike and Tina Turner. Eventually, Storm was able to open a small gap on his teammate. With each subsequent lap, the margin increased, and so the infighting commenced between Doub and Applegate (Kona/CCA) for second position. In the end, Doub was able to finish ahead of Applegate. Charles Pendry finished in fourth place, maintaining his hold on a third place finish for the series. John Degle finished fifth. In the women's elite race, Candice Blickem of Genesis Scuba, had more troubles than Michael Jackson at a Chuck-E-Cheese, when she flatted on the opening lap, quite a distance from the pit. She persevered to finish in second place despite the problems. Mandy Lozano (River City) won the race, which helped solidify her presence on the podium for the series, giving her the third position overall. Daniele Staskal came in fourth on the days race, but had enough points to capture the second place overall. Without a doubt, Candice Blickem took home the series championship. All three ladies, vying for the third spot on the podium (Lozano, Billington, and McCauley) were separated by scant number of points leading into the final, and it was fortunate that Lozano had both of her wheels with her. Excitement mounted in the Master's races of the day as well. In the "35" race, a tight war commenced as four riders separated themselves from the rest of the field. Jim Bruner (Cycling Spoken Here) took off with a commanding start, bringing along Derek Powers (Doughnut Boy), Michael Scholtz (DeFeet), and Martin Visser (NOC). The quartet of riders stayed together until the final lap. During a technical trench on the trail, Bruner elected to ride the muddy rut, while Scholtz and Powers dismounted. This move by Sholtz and Powers created a sizable lead on the other two riders. On the run-up, Scholtz and Powers were within spitting distance of each other, and with only a short distance left, all present knew it would come down to a sprint. Scholtz waited for the right moment and then attacked, leaving Powers and rolling through the finish unencumbered. In the "45" race, the top three riders were separated by a mere 26 points. Kerry Shields (Carolina Masters) came up with a win in the day's race, catapulting him into second place for the series. Finishing behind Shields, was Arthur Reaves (OLP) who kept his series lead for the overall victory. John McBurney (Freewheels) finished third for the day, while the third place series position went to Andrew Ammon (Carolina Masters). As mentioned in previous writings, the contested Women's B race was not short of thrills. With only 5 points separating the two Sarahs (Sarah Worthington - Doughnut Boy; Sarah Alholm - USAF), any small mechanical or difficulty would cost the series. The dynamic duo took off from the start, but Worthington was able to best her opponent and seal the deal on the series title. Alholm finished second in the race and second in the series, followed by Cathy Beck (GVC) who finished third in the race, third in the series. In the Men's B race, Kenneth Borgeson (GVC) got his 4th first place finish and clinched the overall series title. Ryan McCall (All-Star) finished second in the race, followed by David Goodwin. The finish by McCall was not enough to take away Goodwin's second place position in the series, so he had to settle for 3rd. In the Men's C race, Chris Ramm (Paceline) won his second race in a row, solidifying his 2nd place series position. Dave Standridge (Cross Creek) showed consistent placings all year, and his second at the race in Flat Rock game him a seven-point advantage over Ramm, winning the series. Abram Woodward (VA Tech) finished third in the race, and third in the series. Finally, in the junior race, Kenny Blackburn (Heart's Racing) won the race, and hands down, the series. Second place finisher, Sean Allison was short by only 4 points to make the podium for the series. Second for the series was Chris Wade (Charlotte Sports), followed by Jared Cakebread (Hampton Trails). Well the series was a success, and as a competitor, I would like to personally thank the many sponsors and racers that helped promote the sport of cyclocross. A special thank you to Tim Hopkins, who put the series together. I hope everyone can make it out to the Winter Series, starting January 3 and 4.
