First event of the day was a combined 'C' and Juniors race. An aggressive start by Damian Almanza was soon countered by up and coming Junior Chris Hall and local bike shop owner Brendan Sheehan. The challenging course featuring two long uphill runs with barriers, quickly proved a handicap for those lugging mountain bikes. A long road section to the finish line each lap was also deceptively difficult due to it's gradual rise. Iowa rider, John Meehan, came out on top in the men's 'C' class, Stacy Tripodi won the women's 'C', while Hall held on to take the Junior event. The second race of the day combined the Women's A's and Masters with the Men's Master classes over 40. Some of the most talented local cyclocrossers were included in this field including defending 50-54 Silver medalist from 2002 Nationals, Dean Parker. A hole shot start by newcomer Dave Pitt made the racing hot from the start. After a few laps the race settled into a duel between Parker and Curt Shelman (45-49), with Shelman coming out on top. The mixed field women's race was won with a strong effort by Glenda Taylor (45-49), who never looked back after the start. Next on line were the Elite men and the B class. Favorite Shadd Smith took command early, with a chasing Mike Koons trying to reduce damage. Smith's well tuned style kept him out of trouble, allowing an easy win in this tune up for Nationals in Portland. Scott Hammack, an active rider and organizer of collegiate cycling at Kansas State University took the 'B' class. The final event of the day was a new twist on the "Cyclocross Relay" developed by race promoter Chris Locke. This event featured 3 riders to a team, each riding 1/3 of a lap of the championship course. Three stacked with talent teams participated in this unique race. A handicap rule was introduced for the mixed gender team, allowing leadoff rider for the 'Bikes and Boards Composite", Teresa Jarsemkoski a 10 second head start. The first leg ended at a steep two barrier run-up. Dean Parker riding for 'Team X' and Jarzemkoski came into the run with Parker a step behind. Both riders were completely tied up with lactate heavy legs, but the wildly cheering crowd was treated to a virtual tie at the hand-off to the second leg riders. Trailing team 'Pimps and Hoes', had decidedly the most political incorrect name but also the most dangerous anchor leg rider, Shadd Smith. The race came to a close with less than 100 meters to go as Smith on his cyclocross bike closed the gap to Damian Almanza aboard a mountain bike. Smith cruised across the line for his second easy victory of the day. Custom awards, a fine raffle and food provided by director Chris Locke and his array of sponsors and workers (notably Roger Harrison, whose crew set the course up) finished out the festivities.
