LVRC King of the Bowl - Race 2

Milton keynes, May 21, 2002.

Report by Jon Miles

That special Milton Keynes Bowl treat, rain, visited the riders at the second of the LVRC King of the Bowl Series races, but did not dampen their spirits as we saw some aggressive racing from the off.

With the ABC group starting first at a one lap disadvantage over the DEF group, there was action from the start as the 'youngsters' set about getting that lap back again.

With Joe Quill and Bob Thomson (both Team Milton Keynes) and Bob Varney and Paul Freeman (both Alpha RC-Phil Corley Cycles), all regulars at the Bowl, forcing the pace, they soon 'unlapped' themselves and set about putting real space into the other group.

With the rain now driving into their faces the ABC group kept splitting and re-forming with Varney off the front on his own on three separate occasions before he finally broke the elastic as the five lap to go board came out. Faithful teamwork from Freeman in the 'chasing' group gave Varney the chance to extend his lead and as he came into the finishing area for the last time it was Bob Varney who held onto to cross the line twelve seconds in front of Paul Freeman who won the chasing group sprint for second from Paul Thomson (Hemel Hempstead CC). Bob Thomson (Team Milton Keynes) was fourth whilst Joe Quill (Team Milton Keynes) was tailed off in the last five laps but held on for fifth.

The DEF group were led in by Murray Kirton ( A5 Rangers CC) who had managed to hold onto the tiring Quill, whilst Bowl Supremo Dick Selley (North Bucks RC) won the bunch sprint for second from Dave Stockley (Merseyside Wheelers) and John Talbot (Welwyn Wheelers)
