Cummings makes it look easy

By Richard Allchin, Sport & Publicity

Talented 21 year old British international Steve Cummings (Sport & Publicity) won Britain's top road race over the Queen's Jubilee holidays.

The 149km Featherstone RC "Pete' s Race" in Yorkshire last Monday attracted many of the best riders in the North of England in an event over six laps of a tough and undulating course.

A small break developed almost from the start and Cummings and British international team-mate Paul Manning, together with a handful of others joined the leaders before the end of the first lap which now included Wayne Randle, Mike Jones and Julian Ramsbottom.

Although the top domestic team of John Tanner, Mark Lovatt and Kevin Dawson (Compensation Group ) missed the original move , they proved to be best of the rest, after Cummings and Manning went clear with two laps to go.

However it was far too late to make an impression on the flying duo of regular Great Britain internationals on one of their rare appearances in the U.K.

Cummings went clear in the last kilometre to win easily with Paul Manning seemingly a contented runner-up. It was a couple of minutes before John Tanner came late to claim third place. Steve said, "I was determined to win today and didn't want to leave anything to chance. Paul was flying but I felt stronger as the race went on. After not feeling too good in the Lincoln Grand Prix I also wanted to produce a good ride for my new sponsors. I am off to France shortly to ride the Tour of Tarn /Gironde stage race with the National team and hope I can get more success there."

Results, 149km
