North-West Veteran Cycling Club Sesquicentenary Road ClassicTasmania, April 1, 2002Mick Who?By Rod Morris Unheralded Launceston rider Mick Poxon caught his opponents and the handicapper off guard in the North-Western Veteran Cycling Club's Road Classic on Easter Monday. Forty-year-old Poxon was granted a liberal handicap of just five minutes behind the outmarker, Lyall Cubit. Riding with some well drilled co-front markers, Poxon had plenty left in the tank when it came time to sprint to the finish line. Poxon comes from a triathlon background and has only just taken to road racing. Second home was Ulverstone 69-year-old Jan Reinhold, while a much younger group of 30 to 40 year olds took the remainder of the prizemoney placings. Peter Milton from Hawley Beach snatched third ahead of Latrobe's Shane "Rabbit" Warren and Devonport Justin Clements. The 35 km race was part of the Central Coast Council's Sesquicentenary Ulverstone celebrations. (That's 150 years for non-Latin speakers Ed) A total of 30 veterans from Tasmania and NSW took part in the race, with race director Craig Price taking fastest time honours. Results, 35km1 Mick Poxon (5 min) 56.34 2 Jan Reinhold (5 min) 3 Peter Milton (8 min) 4 Shane Warren (0 min) 5 Justin Clements (8 min) Fastest time: Craig Price |
