Stage 2 - June 16: Arezzo - Arezzo, 150 km

Australian Team Report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager

The Australians did everything right today, almost. The first break of the day went at just after the first climb of the day and Scott Davis was in it. The next group to go over to it included Gene Bates and made a total of 29 riders with Gene the best on GC. The group worked well and with 30km to go, had 3 minutes over the main group.

Scott and Gene were working hard to gain as much time as possible and when the front bunch split, they were in the front 8. They rode hard all the way to the finish and Scott was third on the stage but most of our interest was on the overall classification. The timekeepers announced that Gene had taken the jersey but 10 minutes later the Casprini team disputed this. After much deliberation, Guidi from Casprini was announced the leader after it was discovered that he had ridden away from the main group and joined the third group on the road which put him close enough to Gene to maintain a time advantage as he finished in front of Gene yesterday.

Gene's was the leading foreign riders jersey but when the GC came out it was revealed that more leading riders had made it to the third group including two Spaniards so Gene will have to give that one back too. He is now 7th and Scott is now 10th.
