Stage 1 - April 17: Huesca - Cerler, 152 km
Piepoli maintains iBanesto domination

Italian Leonardo Piepoli of Banesto continued his team's domination of the Spanish tours when he easily took the first stage of the Vuelta a Aragon travelled 152 kms from Huesca to the Pyrenean ski resort of Cerler. Last weeks rash of winter weather that covered the Basque country and northern Spain left its mark with snow covering the higher peaks around the finish. But gone was the hard weather that had dominated the Vuelta a la Pais Vasco.
The stage commenced with an escape at the 12km mark by Astorlaza (Ag2r) and Garrido (Jazztel) who by the 57 km mark had created for themselves a gap of 7 minutes. Over the first categorised climb at Alto de San Roque (75.5kms) Garrido tooks the points from Astorlaza with Latasa (Banesto) with Torrent (Jazztel)3.55 behind.
The race from the decent of the Alto de San Roque to the finish was characterised by
one long steady up hill drag of some 70 odd kms. It was not necessarily an easy coast nevertheless the pair managed to stay away until the lower ramps of the Cerler. Astorlaza taking the intermediate sprint points at Graus (86.2kms)and Benasque (145.5 kms). At the 122km mark they still had a gap to the peloton of 3.40.
It was on the steeper slopes of the Cerler over the last ten kilometres that the race for the stage and maybe G.C. really came alive. This is a five day tour with lots of hills traversing as it does Aragon and the mountains of the Pyrenees. Since the Catalan week the Spanish press have been talking about the new politics at Banesto - no single team leader but a squad full of leaders who can take a race on any day and here in Aragon just like in Pais Vasco and Catalana that new politic seems to be bearing fruit.
As the Cerler steepened and the snow beacme more prominent on the slopes above, Banesto had at least three riders "up there" - last weeks victor, Aitor Osa, Santi Blanco and the Italian Leonardo Piepoli. Only Juan Carlos Dominguez (Phonak)Alexander Shefer (Alessio) could provide any challenge, but in the end simply Piepoli just road all comers off his wheel. His teamate Osa stuck with him into the final kilometre, but in the end Piepoli set a pace that the Basque couldn't follow.
In the end Banesto showed that at the moment they are capable of putting different men on the podium, week in, week out. They are shaping up to be a versatile force to be reckoned with and if the form that we have seen over the last few weeks continues they could prove to be invincible in the national Vuelta in September. Today, Banesto not only took the stage, they have finished with three riders in the top five and they are, as a whole, ideally placed to control this race until the finish on Sunday.
But as always, it is not over until the proverbial fat lady sings and there is a bunch of riders within a minute of Piepoli who could still make a play for G.C. They include Roberto Heras (USPS), the boy - Oscar Sevilla (Kelme),and others like Bingen Fernandez (Cofidis)and Juan Carlos Dominguez (Phonak)who have had some form over the last few weeks. Of note up there at the end on a high mountain finish was the zebra suited Martin Perdiguero (Acqua & Sapone-Cantina Tollo) only 44 seconds behind the winner. His last prominent finsih in Spain was outsprinting Zabel during the Catalan Week. One would have assumed his role here this week was to lead out his boss, Mr Zebra Suit, Cipo, but maybe he wants to show the boss that this climbing business isn't all that hard after all for a sprinter to do!
