Le Tour du Grand Montréal - 2.1Canada, May 29-June 1, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Next Stage Stage 1 - May 29: Lachine ITT, 11kmThorburn takes the early leadBy Kirsten Robbins in Montreal, Canada
Webcor's Christine Thorburn has won the Tour du Grand Montreal opening time trial for the second year in a row. The top women in the world arrived to begin the Tour du Grand Montreal time trial this morning just one day after the completion of Saturday's Montreal World Cup. The time trail changed drastically from the previous years two-kilometer prologue. This year it was held in Lachine along a very technical four-kilometer circuit that included twelve corners. The circuit was to be completed two and a half times before veering off to the finishing straight away, for a total distance of eleven kilometers. Thorburn told Cyclingnews, "like everyone, I was nervous about doing two laps with so many riders on the course at the same time. There were pedestrians on the course and I just tried to pay attention and not be a chicken through the corners." Thorburn posted a time of fourteen minutes and fifty seconds. Hot on her trails were the TEAm Lipton duo Kori Seehafer, at fourteen minutes and fifty-eight seconds and Kristin Armstrong in fifteen minutes and one second. Thorburn also won the prologue here last year despite the very different course. "Last year I did more track work in the early season which was an advantage for me," said Thorburn. "This year's course had a lot of turns and I have been working on getting better at them. It is an odd distance because we usually do really short or long effort so it was harder to pace your self for this type of distance." Tomorrow the women will race the one hundred and seventeen kilometer Rigaud Road Race. It is a demanding course with two significant climbs.
