Panaria again on a roll

Depicting a scene that bore an uncanny resemblance to the domination shown by the team at last year's race, where they won seven out of ten stages on offer, apprentice Maximiliano Richeze lead out his sprint maestro Ruben Bongiorno to give Ceramica Panaria-Navigare its second successive victory in as many days.

Regardless of the rider, the orange armada return to Malaysia each year equipped with at least one star sprinter. This year is no different, and while equalling last year's performances is no mean feat, Panaria appear to be well on their way to doing just that in 2006.

Despite the apparent ease with which victory was achieved, Bongiorno told Cyclingnews the day was in fact more difficult than initially envisaged by the team. "The first 30 kilometres were hard, always up and down, up and down. After that, the race got quite easy, and the most difficult part was the last 10 kilometres," he explained.

"It was quite dangerous with everybody trying to push to the front [in the finale], and it became a question of trying to avoid any crashes. We were going very, very fast and there were a number of riders who could of won this sprint; thanks to my team, I had a very good lead-out and went a little early from around 250 metres, but managed to hold everyone off, so I'm really happy."

Not so happy were at the half-dozen riders who found themselves on the ground when Panaria lead-out man Mirko Allegrini peeled off towards the barriers with around 200 to go, and as a consequence, Erki Pütsep (AG2R-Prevoyance), Angel Vallejo (Relax-Gam), Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk), Yevgeniy Yakolev (Equipe Asia) and Allegrini himself all came crashing down. British rider Newton looked worst off, with his Commonwealth Games preparation now in doubt.

The day's racing once again featured an early move that predictably included breakaway specialist (or masochist) Koji Fukushima (Japan) and Albert Primero (Casino Filipino), but after the opening day's events that saw the Le Tour de Langkawi turn on its head, there were plenty of teams unwilling to give into their gains of yesterday.

Consequently, there were no real significant moves on the leaderboard with the stage ending in a bunch gallop. But up-and-coming German sprinter Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud), after placing fourth in each of the intermediate primes on the road to Sitiawan and third in the final sprint, now lies second on the overall classification, just six seconds behind the yellow jersey of Richeze.

However, the 26 year-olds biggest hurdle isn't taking the lead, particularly in light of tomorrow's stage to the Cameron Highlands; it's finding a way to hold onto his sprint jersey against the might and power that is Ceramica Panaria-Navigare.

"We will see - it is a long week [ahead], and I feel good in the [intermediate] sprints, but also in the final, where I don't feel I have that much less power [compared to the riders from Panaria]," Radochla said, growing more confident as the each day progresses.

How it unfolded

With the 119 finishers from yesterday's stage having all slept well, the same number took to the start in Tanjung Malim this morning. A small town 90 kilometres northwest of Kuala Lumpur but still inland, the scene at the start was subdued. This wasn't surprising; many seemed to be still mulling over the dramatic events of yesterday.

The same couldn't be said of the opening kilometres: attacks were fast and frequent but none stuck until perennial escapist Koji Fukushima (Japan) and Casino Filipino's Albert Primero broke away 35 kilometres into the stage.

With Fukushima was doing the lion's share of the work, the pair quickly settled into a good rhythm, their lead opening from 2'20 at km 52 to a maximum 7'15 at the first sprint in Sungai Besar (km 73.1).

By the next sprint at Simpang Empat (km 104.7), however, both riders appeared to be tiring in the heat of the day and what were now sweltering conditions, salt and slobber lacing the face of 32 year-old Koji-san. Some extra firepower would have been welcomed, and Zahit Sayuti (Malaysia) did try to get across, but the Malaysians efforts came to nought at roughly the same point.

With the front pair dying a long, hot death, the peloton weren't really forced to chase, and with 20 kilometres remaining, the lead of Fukushima, Primero and Yakolev - who bridged across shortly before the third and final sprint in Kg. Kayan (km 145.6) - was under the two-minute mark.

Past the 10 kilometres to go banner, it was all together again as the streets led to Sitiawan. Then inside the final few kilometres, the roads widened and pace fastened, with the orange and bottle green jerseys of Panaria and Wiesenhof prominent at the head of the peloton that now resembled a perfectly-formed arrow.

With 300 metres to go, yesterday's stage winner Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) gave his countryman and team-mate Ruben Bongiorno a fantastic lead-out, ensuring another Panaria victory - the two going 1-2 at the line with Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) third - but not before a nasty pile-up at the head of affairs that took down at least half a dozen riders when Panaria lead-out man Mirko Allegrini swung off. Among the casualties were: Erki Pütsep (AG2R-Prevoyance), Angel Vallejo (Relax-Gam), Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk), Yevgeniy Yakolev (Equipe Asia) and Allegrini himself.

Stage 3 preview - Sunday, February 6: Lumut to Cameron Highlands, 150.6 km

Tomorrow's 1,518 metre-high finish in the foothills of the Cameron Highlands may not be as explosive as the stage to Genting that follows, but will nevertheless provide a solid indication of who's on song to take this tour one week from now. Affirmed Credit Agricole's Francesco Bellotti: "Tomorrow is a good stage for me... I think - a big climb, and every one [of the GC contenders] can test themselves."
