Stage 17 - September 22: Plasencia - Estación de Esquí La Covatilla (Béjar), 170 km

The Vuelta heads into Heras territory with today's stage puts the peloton into an undulating 170km grind from Plasencia to Estación de Esquí La Covatilla one of the longest days of the race. Along the way, the peloton will face the twin Cat. 1 climbs of Puerto de Piornal and Puerto de Honduras, as well as the Cat 3 climb of Alto de El Cerro warming the legs up for the special category ascent into Estación de Esquí La Covatilla. Santi Blanco won here in 2002 ahead of Heras who was able then to conserve his overall lead. Another day that could decide the race.
