the Port Kennedy Cycles Handicap series last weekend. A strong field assembled to contest Peel Cycling club's 45km Kennedy cycles handicap event. With the weather cool, overcast and at time blustery, riders were eager to get started. Club President Tony Van Merwyk and Ruth Haslam along with Rob Davis got proceedings underway. They were closely followed by Wade Longworth, Steve Goulds and Richard Le Tessier. Off a 6 minute handicap was a group that included Derek McVickers, Troy Main and Brett Clapham. This trio were quickly into action and intent on staying ahead of the back markers. But a group off 3 minutes led by Alan Clark in company with Paul Slocombe, Russell Fryer and Steve Ware smartly found their rhythm and stormed around the circuit to eventually reel in all before them. Shayne Dimmer, Phil Diesel, Raymond Loly and Ryan Wilmott were working off scratch and also closing in on the early handicappers with Dimmer leading the charge. Having been passed on lap 4 the group of Tony Ridgley, Alan Taylor and Sheona Clark held nothing in reserve to press on for a strong finish. With 4kms to the line Dimmer smartly joined the leading group of Clark, Slocombe and Fryer, but Clapham, Ware and McVickers showed no signs of easing up. Early sprint lead outs from Dimmer and Slocombe initially stretched the bunch with the finish line in sight, but Clapham delivered the winning sprint ahead of Clark and Fryer with Ware in fourth. Dimmer posted the fastest time of 1:07:10 and rounded out the top five placing's.
