Tour of Utah - NEUtah, USA, August 7-12, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - August 12: Deer Valley - Snowbird, 183 kmCaldwell takes stage six and Moninger wins the Tour of UtahBy Steve Medcroft at Snowbird Lodge
Thirty-nine year old Health Net/Maxxis stage race and mountains specialist Scott Moninger secured the overall win in the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah sponsored by Zions Bank on Saturday. Moninger took the win after Glenn Chadwick (Navigators Insurance; only 21 seconds back on GC) attacked race leader Jeff Louder (Health Net/Maxxis) three kilometers from the top of the day's brutal final climb up to the Snowbird ski resort. Louder, after expending a lot of energy during the week to take the jersey, says Moninger was "just on fire today" and he is glad the victory was captured by a teammate. TIAA Cref rider Blake Caldwell won the stage. Part of an early, thirteen-rider break which also contained three of his teammates, Caldwell, three minutes back on GC at the start of the stage, was the leader on the road for much of the day. But when the field reached the final ascent, his gap closed and he struck out from his remaining breakmates with only the stage win in mind. Up and up we go As soon as the riders completed the mandatory 5.5 miles of neutral riding, the attacks started on the open roads headed for the first climb of the day. An unsually-large group established a gap that reached over three minutes by the base of the climb. Eventual stage winner Caldwell sat in the break, protected by three teammates. Although it didn't contain a top-five GC threat, Louder's team knew that the break represented a danger to their potential for a stage win so they set tempo on the first tough climb (the approximately seven-mile, 2'600-foot climb up Alpine Loop past the Sundance Ski resort and the home of movie star Paul Newman) with two ascents and 5,500 feet of climbing left in the stage. "We were concerned about the sheer number of guys," Scott Moninger said after the race. "That's a lot of horsepower and you had several teammates willing to sell out for one rider; Blake Caldwell being that rider. It definately put some pressure on us." With the pressure from behind, Caldwell's teammates had their work cut out for them. "Timmy (Duggan), Steve (Cozza) and Mike (Creed) did an incredible job drilling it in the climbs," Caldwell said. "Mike (set tempo on) the first climb." Cozza attacked on the climb over Traverse Ridge, the shortest of the day at approximately four miles and 1,100 feet. "Steve was able to stay out there and give us an advantage; it made the other guys work because with four riders, it would have been up to us to chase if someone else had gone." Caldwell was still safely within the lead group at the base of the day's epic final climb. He admits that with a plus-two minute lead, he entertained thoughts of an overall win but stayed focused on the team's major goal. "Sometimes if you go for too much you can throw it away," he said. "We kept our main goal of a stage win in mind and worked to keep the gap we had at the bottom." The group shattered in the final kilometers and twenty-four year old Caldwell found himself with a fifty meter lead over the second placed rider (Neil Shirley of the KJZZ Composite Team) coming into the finish line.
Behind him on the mountain, a chase group containing all the race's marquee climbers and GC threats (Moninger, Chadwick, Swindlehurst, Grejales, Wherry and Louder) was tearing itself apart looking to lock in the final division of prize money. With Louder in yellow, the pacemaking fell to Moninger. "Scott was amazing today," Louder said. "He rode support for me all the way until the end. The pace was really, really high all day." So high, in fact, that Louder struggled to remain connected when first Grejales launched an attack that would fail then, ultimately, Chadwick would launch an attack that would do Louder in. "Jeff looked like he was struggling so I had a go to try and get a gap and see what would happen," Chadwick said. "I waited for a bit once I got a gap for one of my teammates (Swindlehurst of Grejales) to come across, but everyone was stuffed I think. And Scott was riding awesome; he's got a big engine, especially at altitude. Once he came across, it was like 'oh, shit.'" "I was trying to set a good enough tempo to put the other guys in stun mode," Moninger said. "I could tell Jeff was having trouble responding to surges so I tried to stay steady, hoping I would keep him out of trouble. Unfortunately, when Chadwick went, we knew we couldn't even give twenty seconds." The two fought each other to the line. "I put in a couple of surges but (Moninger) sat on me the whole way up there," Chadwick said. Chadwick's efforts pulled the two riders into first and second in the overall standings. The two shook hands as they crossed the line. Louder was philosophic about the final outcome. "I wanted to win, of course, but it's a huge consolation that it was a team win." As for his success throughout the tough, six-day stage race? "It's shown me that I can be there to challenge for the overall, which is a good step for me. For an inaugural race (the Tour of Utah operated as an elite/amateur event in 2004 and 2005 on a smaller scale) it was a really deep field. It gives me confidence going into nationals. And something to build on for next year." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Steve Medcroft/Cyclingnews.com
