South Region circuit race championshipsColerne Airfield, June 24, 2006The GWR Team took their first Championship title of 2006 when Grant Bayton sprinted to victory in the South Region circuit race championships at Colerne Airfield on Saturday. After some 12 miles, with 25 still remaining, Grant Bayton and teammate Nic Tilling attacked, causing the peloton to split into three distinct groups. Five riders, including the pair, forged ahead to form a lead breakaway, despite the efforts of the chasing pack, the five gained an advantage of two minutes, staying clear to contest the finish. Bayton unleashed an explosive sprint to claim his fourth win of the season and the teams first Championship gold medal. In the closing stages Tilling and another rider tailed off from the lead riders and some 27 seconds behind the victor contested fourth place in a tight sprint where Tilling was officially placed fifth in the final results, despite many bystanders believing he had taken fourth. Some 60 competitors lined up for the supporting race for third and fourth category riders held over 26 miles. Just after half distance two riders broke clear and although missing the initial move, GWR Teams Dan Smith, sensing the danger, quickily crossed the gap to make a lead group of three. Working well together they gained a small lead, but one of the riders, unable to maintain the pace, returned to the peloton leaving two riders clear. Smith led into the final lap, but approaching the final corner, the other rider attacked leaving Smith to take second allowing him to upgrade to second category rider achieving his target set at the start of the season.
