PrestigeVC.Com/Viner Surrey League
Cutmill, May 31 2004
Attacking straight after the flag went down, the promoting club's Duncan Urquhart
(PrestigeVC.com/viner/MAR Support Services) attacked with Matthew Melville (VC
St Raphael) on his wheel and was never seen again by many for the whole race!
Some of those able to bridge the gap, which went up to a maximum of 2:20 at
one point, included eventual winner and renowned strongman Robin Sharman, riding
for the newly formed Recycling.co.uk racing team. Robin, who is not often seen
down South except for the Premier Calendar races, was fresh from his regional
championships, which he incidentally won, so he had a few miles in his legs
already! This did not stop him pursuing the disappearing Urquhart - who had
managed to drop Melville back into the bunch - along with Tom Hemmant (London
Dynamo) and Steven Richards (VC Meudon). Urquhart eventually came back to these
three, who contested the finish in the lead up to the final hill, when Sharman
proved far too strong, finishing well clear of the remainder of the break. As
the rest of the riders came in, there were notable rides by escapees from the
bunch Steve Gowar and Tony Kelly (Pacific RT), Craig Peter (VC Meudon) and Matt
Melville. The draggy hill up to the finish, which had already been covered nine
times made it very easy for the judges to sort out the placings down to 29th,
with Justin Hoy (Evans RT) looking the worse for a night out the night before
in the lanterne rouge position. That'll learn you!
Overall a well contested and exciting race. Excellent organisation by the PrestigeVC,
superb mechanical backup from Jack Halford, who had to deal with about nine
punctures in total, and the catering in the village hall was pretty good too
thanks to Rob Enslin's better half! Many thanks to all the volunteers, marshal's,
helpers, officials, judges, etc, who all know how much they contributed to make
this event a success. Weather was nice too!
