Abergavenny Road ClubGovilon Garage and Bikebase Handicap RR, June 10, 2004Club riders fill first and tenthOn a warm but windy evening, with the threat of the odd thundershower, the promoting club scored a home win when Tim Rose outsprinted the main bunch after the scratch group failed to catch them. With each of the three groups containing roughly the same number of riders the handicap was set at an even four minutes and four minutes. With Julian Winn and Anthony Malarczyk in the scratch group it looked highly likely that the whole race would come together on the third of three fifteen mile laps. The second group, consisting of 3rd Cats and 2nd Cat Vets quickly ate into the longmarkers advantage and caught them on the second passage of the dual carriageway to Raglan. At this point however the scratch group was still two and a half minutes in arrears with less than half the race left. With the main 'bunch' now consisting of forty or so riders they co-operated well to limit the scratch groups gains. At ten miles remaining the scratch group had further reduced the deficit to one minute twenty seconds before fate lent a hand when Julian Winn punctured. The impetus immediately went out of the chase and with five mile left the gap had opened again to nearly two minutes. As the bunch approached the Raglan roundabout for the final time, with a mile and a half left, a small group of six riders clipped off the front but were quickly brought to heel by Abergavenny RC rider Stuart Davies. This left the bunch intact on the final drag to the finish with Rose easily riding away from the bunch to capture his, and the Club's first 'proper' road race win of the season. The Club also 'topped and tailed' the top ten places with Club Chairperson, Graham Edwards, sprinting to a fine tenth place after working hard with the vets group to try and stay away.
