Lady luck eludes Rheeder

Exel captain Rupert Rheeder was dealt a bad hand at this weekends Monte Casino 100 held on Sunday, when he unclipped his foot during the sprint against Microsoft’s Waylon Woolcock.

The 120 km race started at a blistering pace with some attacks coming from the teams of Exel, Microsoft, Di-Data and Colorpress/Cyclingnews. With just under 20 km covered, a 3-man break consisting of Nolan Hoffman (Exel), Jay Thompson (Di-Data) and Jacques Fullard (Microsoft) went clear. The break also came shortly before the first Hot Spot and it was Hoffman that crossed the line ahead of the other escapees.

The trio worked together and held off the field for the best part of 40 km but not before Di-Data’s Thompson managed to snatch the second Hot Spot prime at about 60 km. With the peloton intact, it was the Microsoft outfit that was again showing their dominance by doing the majority of attacking. It did not take long for the attacks to bear fruit and a sizeable group containing all the race favorites went clear.

For team Microsoft, they were in the best position as they had the numbers on their side but Exel’s Rupert Rheeder had other plans and he launched a telling attack with about 40 km remaining. He was joined by Daniel Spence and Waylon Woolcock (both Microsoft) and Di-Data’s Dennis van Niekerk.

As the front-runners made their way towards Muldersfdrift, Rheeder was driving the break and was being assisted by the other three riders. However, with some 20 km to go the Microsoft riders made their intentions known as Spence began attacking. Rheeder was quick to respond but was immediately counter-attacked by Woolcock. The battle continued and with 5 km to the line, Rheeder had to dig deep to latch onto the wheel of Woolcock when he jumped. The duo managed to put some distance between themselves and Spence and van Niekerk.

“When he had about 1 km to go, Waylon was in front and he basically started leading out the sprint. As we turned to the finish I tried to accelerate past him but I somehow managed to pull my foot from my pedal. By the time I clipped it back in Waylon got about 6 meters on me and with just 150 m to the line I couldn’t catch him. Nonetheless, he deserved the win because he was really strong out on the road and even coming into the sprint he was in good shape,” said Rheeder.

The final podium position was taken by Hanco Kachelhoffer with the main field a bit further back.
