Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Peel Cycling ClubThe 2007 Peel Classic Road Race, Sunday, August 26, 2007Wayne Thompson claims Peel ClassicThe handicap event covered 76kms in wild and blustery conditions and was organised by the Peel Cycling Club. With big prize money on offer, riders pulled out all stops to get a piece of the pie on the relatively flat 15km circuit. As mentioned conditions were tough with a strong westerly howling across the course which eventually resulted in the retirement of some seven riders with only a few laps under their belts. With some minor changes to the handicaps the race was underway just after 9.30am with riders heading immediately into the breeze. Leading the way some of the early markers were the likes of Jack Iveson, Brian Kennedy and Joe Cox, followed smartly by Colin Rossiter, Phil Edwards and Andrew Bennett. However between laps two and three riders were already feeling the pinch and opted for a more relaxing atmosphere on the bench. With three laps complete and going along nicely off the eight minute mark, Steph Ratcliffe, Steve Ware, Ed Campbell with David Equid were already reeling in many of the early markers although Equid was doing it a bit tough at this point. Off the 1min 30sec mark Dave Berglund, Mark Roberts with Wayne Thompson and Dean Gathecole were also making good ground to eventually reel in the Ratcliffe group on the final lap some 7kms from the line. Steve Dodd off 12min did some good work with the Ratcliffe group before drifting back, Richard Le Tessier and Derek McVickers shared the work load while Joe Cox and Jack Iveson were relishing in the conditions. Back on the home stretch the leading group of five riders held nothing in reserve and in a great tussle were eventually led over the line by Wayne Thompson with Dave Berglund 2nd, Steph Ratcliffe 3rd, Mark Roberts 4th and Dean Gathercole 5th Further back George Miller, Dave Stewart, Eric Cox with Gary Collett were seemingly out of the hunt but on their last lap their effort was pure grunt making up enormous time to pull back all bar the top five placings. Fastest time and in 6th spot was George Miller off scratch in 1hr 54min 40sec and first un-placed lady Kate Watson.
