Tour of Thailand - 2.2Thailand, January 24-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 26: Sukhothai - Khaokho, 198.17 kmFuyu Li leading international Thailand TourMarco Polo Cycling Team report
Chinese Marco Polo rider Fuyu Li had his international breakthrough in the 3rd stage in the Tour of Thailand. In the first mountaintop finish of the Tour, Fuyu managed to beat Iranian Hossein Askari in the sprint to the line. Fuyu Li is the winner of the gold medal at the China Games, just recently in 2005. Fuyu and Jamsran Ulzii-Orshikh from Mongolia were the Marco Polo riders present in a 19-rider breakaway in the 165 km stage between Sukhothai and Khao Kho in the north of Thailand. On the last climb Fuyu attacked on a steep section, and found only Askari in his wheel with 15 km to go. As Askari did not want to work to bring Fuyu the yellow jersey, the Chinese Marco Polo rider had to do all the work by himself. In the final sprint he still beat the Iranian rider for the stage win. "I am so excited, it is great to be in the yellow jersey tomorrow. It is still a long way, with three long stages waiting, but I am pretty confident as we have a very strong team to defend my lead. I want to thank my team mates especially for helping me!" Fuyu showed great form already in the last stage of the Tour of Siam, that ended just days ago. After working for Tour leader Thomas Rabou of Marco Polo for a few days, he managed to still get in an 8th place in the hard uphill finish of the final stage! Thomas Rabou won the individual classification and the Marco Polo team took the team classification in the Tour of Siam. It hasn't happened for years that a Chinese rider won a stage and took the lead in an international Tour outside of China. Fuyu is right on schedule to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The Tour of Thailand is an international race, ranked in the second category of the UCI (International Cycling Union) calendar. The first stage in the Tour was won by Irish rider David McCann, the second stage by Park Sun Baek of Korea. The race will finish on the 29th of January in Bangkok.
