Team Barloworld-Valsir wins the Giro del Capo

Team Barloworld-Valsir today finished its winning streak in home country South Africa by taking out the five stage Giro del Capo. Tiaan Kannemeyer held onto the leader's jersey for the majority of the week, finishing in pink as overall winner of the 2005 Giro del Capo. Today's combination of the last stage of the Giro and The Argus pick 'N Pay was one by Recycling team's Russell Downing in a bunch sprint to the finish after a long, windy and very early start to the 100km stage.
Team Barloworld-Valsir's David George; three time winner of The Giro del Capo was sent in for the sprint to win The Argus after sprinter Antonio Salomone fell ill on stage two and had to pull out of the race. In an unfortunate accident only 1km from the finish George crashed along with one other rider taking him out of the race.
George escaped with just a few cuts and bruises but was extremely disappointed as he was in with a big chance of winning the overall Argus title. George has seen his share of bad luck this season already, making it his fourth crash including being hit by a taxi whilst training in Johannesburg just two days before the National Championships.
"It would be a rather fair assumption to say that I have had my fair share of bad luck already this season. It can only get better, George said."
The team was extraordinarily happy with the win and did not hide it at all in the Barloworld hospitality tent after the race where they were interviewed for fans and Barloworld employees alike.
"This win is what I have been training for a long time," said Kannemeyer. "I would really like to thank my team and sponsors for all of their support over the past years. I simply could not have done it with out any of them. It has been a long road but I think there are going to be many more where these came from."
Team Barloworld-Valsir finished the Giro with the Overall win, the Points Jersey, King of the Mountain Jersey and two stage wins. It was a successful race for the team.
