19th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 15-20, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 20: Saint-Georges circuit race, 165 kmBrozyna Wins 19th Cycliste de BeauceColavita notches third stage winBy Mark Zalewski Tomasz Brozyna and his Action-ATI team had a busy day today keeping an eye on the three riders within one minute of their team leader -- Nathan O'Neill (Colavita Olive Oil p/b Bolla), Scott Moninger (Health Net) and Radoslaw Romanik (Hoops CCC Polsat). Fortunately for Brozyna, second place O'Neil was still 41 seconds down, even after winning yesterday's individual time trial. Therefore, only a major slip-up on today's 143 km circuit race around Saint Georges would jeopardize Brozyna's yellow jersey. The week of hard racing did take its toll on many teams. Four Colavita riders even abandoned during today's stage having sacrificed for O'Neill all week. "We had two guys with soreness and Tyler was our team worker, working feverishly all week long." said team director Chad Davis. "A number of guys were working hard all week long for Nathan." However, the reward for this team was soon to come. "We knew that Aaron was feeling good. He followed the right wheels and at five laps to go, we knew that was going to be the winning break." The major break of seven riders, containing Gord Fraser (Health Net), Charles Dionne (Canadian National Team), Alexandre Nadeau (Volkswagen Trek), Ryan Mckenzie (Canadian National Team), David McKenzie (Navigators), Alexandre Lavallée (Volkswagen Trek) and Aaron Olson (Colavita Olive Oil p/b Bolla), was allowed to gain a time gap, but was reeled back in the end. Aaron Olson, who had attacked with 20 km to go, was able to hang on by fifteen seconds to take the biggest win of his career. "One of my goals was to win a stage," Olson said. "I didn't think it was possible, because Mckenzie, Fraser and Dionne dropped me three times on the KOM. I just couldn't go with the surges up the climb." But the rider from California attacked before coming through the start/finish for the final lap, and was able to take a cushion with him for the final time up the climb. Infighting between the other break members helped insure the win for Olson. "I think Fraser and Dionne were going after the best Canadian [classification]," Olson admitted. Back in the peloton, the race leaders did not let each other out of their sights, and in the end Tomasz Brozyna (Action-ATI) claimed the final yellow jersey, ahead of Nathan O'Neil (Colavita Olive Oil p/b Bolla) and Scott Moninger (Health Net Maxxis). How it unfoldedAlexandre Nadeau (Volkswagon Trek) and Ryan McKenzie (Canadian National Team) were the instigators of today's break of seven that started on the first lap. Ten more riders attempted to cross the gap, but were brought back. The original group of seven dropped Ryan Mckenzie and were down to just six. The gap shot up to more than two minutes, with some in the break obviously working more than others. "Fraser was sitting on most of the day" explained Chad Davis. "Nadeau and Volkswagen did most of the work with Aaron." Action-ATI sat on the front all day, making sure the gap remained large enough to dissuade any threatening attacks and small enough to not become a problem itself. With less than four laps to go, Dionne, Fraser and David McKenzie dropped the other three up the KOM climb and gained a thirty second gap. This trio dangled for a while, eventually coming back to the other three. Then, bad luck struck Olson when is rear wheel flatted resulting in a lengthy chase to get back to the break. "[Aaron] had everything thrown at him but the kitchen sink," Chad Davis remarked. "I've never seen him ride better or stronger since I've known him!" Then with 20 km to go, Olson made his move. Nadeau tried to follow, but his surge was too strong. Dionne and Fraser did not chase as the two were marking each other in the Best Canadian classification. Olson gained thirty seconds on the final lap, and was able to hold the charging field. Twenty-seven riders, including Brozyna, O'Neil, Romanik and Moninger, finished together fifteen seconds behind Olson. Viktor Rapinski took the field sprint.
