Sixteen Put Seventeen Minutes on Field
Tomasz Brozyna Takes Over lead at Cycliste de Beauce

Similar to many of the stages in last year's Cycliste de Beauce, a healthy break of sixteen rode away from the peloton early in the day. But unlike the majority of the stages last year, this break stayed away (though shedding a few riders along the way). Out of the final selection, three riders emerged with Polish rider Tomasz Brozyna (Action ATI) taking out the stage over Viktor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance) and fellow countryman Radoslaw Romanik (Hoop CCC PolSat).
Almost as impressive was the fact that strongman Rapinski joined the break by bridging a gap nearing two minutes! Taking second place after that feat is certainly understandable. Stage one winner Ivan Dominguez (Colavita Olive Oil) made a last ditch effort to get into a late break, but with the break gaining double digits on the field, it was Brozyna who will wear the leader's jersey tomorrow.
Today's stage put quite a few riders down on the overall classification -- only nineteen riders remain within even ten minutes of Brozyna. Rapinski and Romanik remain close, only twenty seconds behind.
How it unfolded
Today's 180 km race began in front of the Church of Saint-Joseph. Ciaran Power (Navigators Insurance) must have been inspired, taking off in a solo break after only ten minutes of racing. After gaining only ten seconds Power came back to the fold. However, the next selection would last a little longer. Sixteen riders made up this group, including: Brozyna, Kazimierz Stafiej and Eugen Wacker (Action ATI); Jeff Louder, Ciaran Power (Navigators Insurance); Mike Jones and Scott Moninger (Health Net); Nathan O'Neil (Colavita Olive Oil) and various other riders.
The break increased its lead to more than two minutes, where it then floated for some time. At half-way, the sixteen member break could not seem to get more time on the field. Coming through the intermediate sprint, the pack had accelerated to bring the time down to under 1:40. That is when Viktor Rapinski took matters into his own hands.
Soon Rapinski had more than a minute on the field and the break had regained time as well, up to 2:15. Once Rapinski joined the break, Navigators had three teammates present. This helped Jeff Louder (Navigators Insurance) take the final KOM points on the stage, adding to his eight points from the day before. Nathan O'Neil (Colavita Olive Oil) was close behind in second.
After the final major climb, Brozyna, Rapinski and Romanik made their move and quickly had a gap on the break, which was now four minutes ahead of the peloton. Finally, Brozyna was able to shed the last of his fellow break riders, winning the stage by thirteen seconds over a four-up sprint for second place.
The remnants of the break trailed in after the top six at various intervals, with the largest group more than a minute behind. The peloton arrived at 17:36 behind the stage winner, shifting the overall standings.
