19th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 15-20, 2004Stage 1 - June 15: Québec-Québec, 125 kmDominguez shows off his quick legs in QuebecIvan Dominguez (Colavita Bolla) took out the first stage of Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce in a sprint finish at the end of the 123km stage in Quebuec City. The win by Dominguez backs up a strong season to date with Dominguez taking out second place in three stages of Tour de Georgia earlier this year. The stage was set in Quebec City over a 12.3km undulating course. Riders had to complete 10 laps of the course for a total of 123km and included the 8.3% gradient Gilmour Hill each lap. Early in the race Canadian rider Buck Miller (Ontario) went on the attack with Bartosz Huzarski (Action ATI) from Poland. The pair built up a convincing lead and by mid way through the race had a gap of over four minutes. Realizing that the break could soon get dangerous, the pace in the pack started to pick up a little, with Health Net aiming to keep things together for their sprinter Gord Fraser, and the gap started to fall. With six laps to go Huzarski attacked and his pace proved too much for Miller, who fell off the wheel and was eventually picked up by the bunch. Huzarski stayed out there causing the bunch to get serious about the chase. Jeff Louder (Health Net) and Martin St-Laurent (Volkswagen) also attacked out of the bunch within the eighth lap, gaining 25" on the field, but were caught as counter attacks followed. The pace in the final laps, set predominantly by the Canadian National Team, was enough to reel in all breakaway riders including Huzarski, and the race ended in a bunch sprint. Dominguez took the win from Charles Dionne (Canadian National Team) and Mark Walters (Navigators) and wears the leaders jersey going into tomorrow's 180km stage. Huzarski's strong ride earned him the KOM jersey for the day and his team, Action ATI, currently lead the teams classification, with five stages remaining.
