45th Grand Prix de Denain - 1.3Denain, France, April 15, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Hushovd too strong for Scanlon
Norwegian Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) has increased his lead in the Coupe de France series after winning round 7, the Grand Prix de Denain. Hushovd beat Irish rider Mark Scanlon (Ag2r) in a two up sprint, after the pair had broken clear of a nine man group. Third place went to Nico Sijmens (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), who is enjoying good form this season. The race was practically over as soon as it began when a group of 21 rode clear
of the peloton after only five kilometres. The break was nearly caught when
Hushovd, Scanlon, Auger, Bozic, Pencole, Van Der Wal, Wan De Walle, Tessier
and McGee counter-attacked and managed to form the decisive break. Sijmens,
Thijs and Muravyev set off in pursuit, closing the two minute gap at the cost
of a great deal of energy. When Hushovd and Scanlon took off in the finale,
none of the other riders reacted and the pair stayed away until the finish,
with Hushovd proving to be too quick for Scanlon. PhotographyImage by Daniel Schamps
