Steels wins final stage
Glomser claims second consecutive home tour win
After spending the best part of a week suffering in the mountains, Belgian champion Tom Steels (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) made it all worthwhile with a victory in the final stage of the Tour of Austria. The last stage in Vienna was flat and fast, and perfectly suited Steels' talents, the big Belgian winning the sprint from Allan Bo Andresen (fakta) and Simone Cadamuro (De Nardi). The general classification was unchanged, with Gerrit Glomser (Saeco) winning his national tour for the second time in a row, followed by Slovenian Jure Golcer (Volksbank) and Hans-Peter Obwaller (Austrian National Team).
The last stage was a 20 lap circuit race on Vienna's ring road, and with ideal conditions the riders made it a fast affair. The first attack came from trackie Frans Stocher (Team Elk) after only 3 km, taking Werner Faltheiner (Arbo Merida Graz) with him for a two man breakaway. The pair worked well and built up an impressive lead of 4'20 (more than half a lap) before the field that was being controlled by Saeco decided to react.
React they did, with the Vlaanderen and Perutnina teams helping to wind up the pace to 60 km/h in parts, which rapidly brought down the gap of the leading pair. With 6 laps (36 km) to go, Stocher and Faltheiner had 2'45, and were caught with just over 3 laps to go by the flying peloton.
Several late attacks were tried but it was impossible to escape the bunch. The sprint was taken by Steels from Andresen and Cadamuro, with the Belgian recording his third season win.
