Mirko Celestino has continued Saeco's dream start to the season by winning the 38th Trofeo Laigueglia, the first UCI race on the Italian calendar. Celestino won the sprint from a group of six riders who had escaped with 15 kilometres to go in the 172.5 kilometre race. In second place was Mapei's Daniele Nardello, while Davide Rebellin (Liquigas) added another third place to his palmares. Celestino, who will be 27 in March, was actually born near Laigueglia in the town of Albenga. However a home town advantage doesn't win you a bike race, and Celestino has come off a bad 2000 season after an excellent 1999. "I have already had several days this year where I have felt right, and I went well in the Mediterranean," he said. "This is an important victory for my morale, and it gives me more enthusiasm to face the coming season. I do not hide the fact that I am thinking of Milan-Sanremo."
The final selection came on the climb of the Paravenna with 27 kilometres to go, when Rebellin attempted a solo escape. He was joined by Petito (Fassa Bortolo), Nardello (Mapei), Merckx (Domo), Lunghi (Colpack) and Celestino on the descent, and the six established a 30 second. Numerous attempts were made by the individuals in the break to attack, but in the end it came to a six man sprint. Celestino led out with 350 metres to go, and emerged a clear winner while the others struggled for the lower places. "There was some wind and I had to change my trajectory a few times," said the winner. "But I knew that they would not have caught me."
