Carnegie-Caulfield CriteriumMulgrave, Australia, April 16, 2000 138 riders met at Glenvale Crescent to race over the fast 1000m street circuit. The weather was overcast and cool with a light northerly breeze. Next Sunday sees the running of the final crit of the season coming the day after the Jack MacGowan Handicap at Modella. Internationally the club has riders in Spain (Weir and Tighello), Belgium (Tuck with Flanders-Prefetex) and Italy where Brad Davidson has secured a contract with Saeco commencing September 2000. Adopted Carnegie rider, Swiss Priska Doppman (Master Team-Carpe Deim) placed 7th in La Fleche Wallonne World Cup race to be 8th in the series so far. And Belgium is facing the return of club strongman Kristjan Snorrason in April eager to rip into the best of the local competition. Six riders escaped the good sized A grade field at about half distance, eventually lapping all but seven determined pursuers. Hilton Clarke jnr. won ahead of R Wilson, Murray Fenwick and Robert Boag. The sprint was unobserved due to a fall in B grade requiring my attention. B grade saw many breaks attempted early with a convincing group establishing a good lead mid way through the hour. A late surge from the bunch behind was all Johnny Clarke (15yo old brother of Troy and Hilton) was waiting for. Displaying the family’s penchant for sprinting Johnny followed the tradition and blitzed in ahead of "Fast" Eddie Perez with veteran Dennis Bowen-Day third and Ryan Kelly fourth. 50 riders in C grade rode like the wind, the attacking began on lap three and didn’t seem to ease until the results were determined. Track out-marker Justin Dovaston hung on at the back throughout coming to the fore when it counted recording a characteristic Abdujaperov style win throwing the bike all over the place! Peter Johnson second by a smidgen from Paul Kennedy and John Hollingworth. A shortage of D graders saw a procession careful to avoid the rampaging C graders. The finale saw B Payne lead home Scott Hawke and S Fernando. Results A GRADE 33 starters 60 minutes + 3 laps 1 Hilton Clarke jnr.
