MTB index page for all MTB content Crocodile Trophy 2002Australia, September 10-22, 2002Main Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 9 - September 19: Kalpower Station - Munburra - 143 Hellish kmThis was the day that put the Crocodile Trophy into a Haut Category event. With it 90 km of deep sand and ruts it took some competitors 13 hours to complete the distance. For many it was like a 50 km technical bike race combined with a 93 km run carrying their bike. It was Hellish. Five cyclist abandoned and many fantasized about doing the same. Bart Bosmans, who was out on his own in the middle of the stage, was attacked by wild pigs and couldn't even make a run for safety. The frightened Belgian had to put his bike between himself and the tusked hog while he slowly made his way to safety. The Tom Taylor two-up of race leader Jaap Vierger and Denis Teeuwen took their second stage by a healthy margin of a couple of minutes and Jurji Robic jumped into second position over all ahead of Kris Lepere. Phil Anderson was still in fourth place on GC at the end of the stage and now has a good shot at third in Kunadra. The women were amazing as usual. Mieke finished in the middle of the field followed by Carrie and Debra who rode home together well after dark. The last finishers used the lights from the four wheel drive follow cars to pick their way through the ruts and sand. Real Iron woman stuff.
