Goldrush for Jacqui Low and Peter Hatton

The 3rd round of the National MTB XC Series took place in the historic gold town of Beechworth, with 234 riders in the race categories and another 50 'fun' riders contesting a treacherous course from Beechworth to Eldorado, a distance of 43km.

This year's course included about 10km of single track and bush tracks, which added considerably to the interest for the riders. The rough tracks and sandy corners took their toll on riders with many 'offs'.

The weather had thankfully cooled down from the previous day's highs of 35C, and spots of rain helped dampen the dust but not the competition of the riders, with many sprint finishers on the line.

The first such sprint was the expected one - that of the leaders in Elite Men - with 4 riders finishing in close pack. Peter Hatton prevailed in a time of 1.20.30 with Brent Miller, Matt Wallace and Aiden Leffmann on his wheel. Hatton now takes the lead in the Elite Men rankings.

Jacqui Low was the clear winner in the Elite Women's field (1.33.15), with a eight minute lead over Tasmanian Eleanor Patterson, closely followed by Niki Gudex. Gudex narrowly retains her number one ranking in the National XC series. Junior world champion and UCI scholarship holder Lisa Mathison not surprisingly won her division in the Under 19 women - she was also the only woman to finish in her division.

The next XC Series race is the return of the Tour de Dirt in Canberra from January 18-19.
