A hot day of racing
The second round of the combined AMBA and MTBA National Cross Country Series promoted by the Hunter Mountain Bike Association was held last Sunday on a hot, dry and dusty course at Killingworth on the outskirts of the NSW town of Newcastle. 145 competitors in total toughed it out in the trying conditions where the number of laps for most categories were reduced due to the extreme weather conditions experienced on the day.
The U15 and U17 men's and all the women's races started the days events with the Elite Women's category winner Jaci Low from the Norwood club in South Australia toughing it out for near on 2 hours to complete a comfortable win from the recently crowned Australia's most sexiest sportswomen Niki Gudex from the Manly Warringah club in Sydney. Sharon Heap from the Gold Coast MTB club rounded out the Elite women's placings.
Probably the hardest races of the day due to the heat was the Junior U19 men and Masters men who started at the hottest part of the day. The Junior men's race was a classic with Bret Townsend from Eurobodalla edging out Shaun Lewis from SA on the last lap for a very hard earned win.
The Elite and Expert men's races followed with again close racing. The two U23 riders Peter Hatton from Southern Offroad and Aiden Lefmann from Manly Warringah raced together for 4 of their 5 laps. Peter followed Aiden for all of this time but made his move on the last lap to win in 1 hour 55 minutes 12 seconds ahead of Aiden. Both these riders appear to have a bright future in the sport. The ever consistent Garth Hennessy from Wollongong MTB took out 3rd place, after completing part of the last lap on a flat rear tyre.
The day's activities concluded with the running of the always exciting Sport men's class. Luckily the weather had cooled by this stage and all competitors welcomed the change and many even finished with smiles on their faces.
All in all a very successful and exciting event for the competitors and spectators alike.
The next round of the series will be held at Beechworth in Victoria on 24 November.
