Tahune Forest Airwalk Mountain Bike Marathon

One day after competing in the inaugural Otway Odyssey MTB Marathon, and finishing fourth, Olympian Sid Taberlay took out the inaugural 90 kilometre Tahune Forest Airwalk Mountain Bike Marathon in Southern Tasmania.
The Tahune Airwalk course winds its way through some of Tasmania's most scenic landscapes amidst the tannin stained waters of the Huon river, ninety minutes from Hobart. The course was an excellent introduction for over 170 competitors to Marathon racing. Two races held on the day, the Half Marathon (45 kilometres) and the Full Marathon (90 kilometres).
The race started off at a furious pace and it wasn't too long before the first clash of wheels bought riders down after some 300m. The leading riders of Taberlay, Grieve-Johnson and Clauson (former Australian Multisport Champion) dominated the field in the early stages of the event. Clauson suffered mechanical trouble and Taberlay and Grieve-Johnson had an uncatchable lead on the rest of the field. Taberlay attacked on the long up-hill section heading to checkpoint 26, and pulled away to finish the course in just over four hours. Ben Grieve-Johnson, finished in a respectable four hours 22 minutes, just 16 minutes behind Taberlay over the marathon distance.

Veteran female, and current Australian Veterans Champion, Eleanor Patterson took out the women's event in a quick time of five hours 19 minutes, placing her 18th overall.
The aptly named "Challenge" half marathon was taken out by Stuart Keep in a time of one hour 44 minutes, just 22 seconds ahead of Sam Robertson. Angela Hayes crossed the finish line the fastest for the women, in a time of two hours two minutes.
The event was very successful, as one of the competitors expressed the common theme amongst those who race "There should be little doubt that this event will grow in recognition as one of the toughest around. It had pretty much everything you could wish for in a MTB race. Fast forestry roads, not to mention the single track, disk destroying down hills and bog holes."
