Soulcrafters dominate men's solo

Sunny skies and a noticeably dried up race course greeted close to a thousand racers at the 8th annual 24 HoA at Laguna Seca on May 13th and 14th in Monterey, California. Unlike the Sea Otter classic a month earlier which treated racers to a mud fest the dust was kicking up on the first lap of the day and racers were treated to a more traditional fast, hardpacked course.

The solo race was dominated by racers flying the flag for sponsors who handbuild frames here in the USA, with two Soulcraft riders, Yuri Hauswald and Rob Dillion taking first and second place. Yuri was the only soloist to complete 21 laps of the course. Joey Figone of El Dorado Hills took the final podium spot while Sean Sullivan of Independent Fabrications completed 20 laps for fourth place in what turned out to be a very tight battle for the podium. In the women's 24 hour race Jennifer Ratay turned in a strong ride to complete 18 laps and take the win.

In the 8 hour solo event local race promoter and fixture on the Bay area cycling scene Keith Defiebre took the win on the men's side with 8 laps while Marnel King of Campbell, CA won the women's race with 6 laps.

Besides the hardcore solo competitors the teams were out in force, and none garnered more attention than the fun loving folks at Team Hamana of San Francisco. With 30 athletes competing on six teams, they undoubtedly win the prize for best attendance. But what sets them apart is their attitude, and their phenomenal pit area, complete with sofas and a foosball table. Ringleader Ron Bolds, outfitted in a hot red dress, explained the team's approach: "It's about the competition, but it's also about the party, before and after the race." Team Hamana members compete year round, but the 24 hour event is something special for them. "This is the only time all year when we really get to race as a team."
