New race record for Australia’s mountain bike epic
Spink spanks his rivals in Flight Centre Peppers Hidden Vale Cross-Country Classic

In a performance which had rivals gasping for air, Victorian cross-country mountain bike champion Murray Spink today shaved an amazing nine minutes off the race record on his way to claiming victory in the Flight Centre Peppers Hidden Vale Epic in South-East Queensland.
In only its third year, Australia’s richest point to point cross-country event produced a healthy field of 1100 starters, and finished with a result which is certain to be remembered for years to come as the race develops its unique tradition.
At the end of 105 soul-destroying kilometres, punctuated with four punishing hill-climbs including the aptly named ‘Razorback’, Spink managed to finally shake off an ever-dwindling lead group of riders before crossing the line alone in a staggering time of 3 hours 54 minutes and 38 seconds.
The Melbourne mountain biker was one of seven riders to break the four hour barrier at this race for the first time, a result indicative of a noticeable improvement in the quality of cyclists contesting the annual feat of endurance mountain biking.

“Yeah, it's good, been building up for this one for a while,” Spink told Cyclingnews soon after crossing the finish line. “I was pretty confident of taking it out and was lucky to get there in the end.”
Luck though played little part in the final 25 kilometre stage of today’s race, with Spink forced to tap into his last remaining reserves of energy, while staving off a challenge from inaugural race winner Mark Frendo of Queensland and New South Wales challenger Shaun Lewis.
“It's a bit more of a road race I suppose the last bit, we had four away from the last check point pretty much,” Spink recounted of his final hour in the saddle.“We rode pretty well together and I was just able too throw a couple of attacks in the last 3 k’s and get away.”
It was a performance which had Frendo, the 2003 winner, searching for answers, after smashing his own Epic PB, only to finish third. “Went ten times better this year than the year I won,” admitted the Queenslander who recently won a state title in road-racing. He added that the race was , “Getting a lot of fast guys; it was pretty hard.”
How it unfolded

Starting atop the Great Dividing Range at the Preston Peak winery near Toowoomba, the race began with a gentle rollout on bitumen and dirt roads across the plateau, before descending along the National Trail into the forest country of Ma Ma Creek. (For international readers – the National trail is a system of bush tracks used mainly for horse riding which follow the Great Dividing Range along the East Coast)
It is here the single-track riding can be downright spectacular, but the trails, built on ‘black soil’, can also turn to a slushy mess with the slightest rain. Fortunately for riders, it was the former, and not the latter scenario, which greeted them on the descent to the forest floor.
The trails of Ma Ma Creek providing an hour long feast of single track riding at its best, the elite field responding with the fastest times yet recorded on the opening stage.
Taking advantage of some local knowledge he’d cottoned onto during a pre-race recce, New South Wales rider Nick Both (Flight Centre Team) snatched a handy lead and some just as handy cash, which was on offer for the first rider to each check-point.
Hammering down the hillside, Both chose the path least followed at one point, managing to briefly outsmart his fellow riders.

“I found a little sneaky gate that no-one else knew about,” Both told Cyclingnews ‘on the quiet’ at race end. “I was looking out for it because I knew part of the track and jumped through that, got away from everybody, went for it, thought yere I can get the first check.”
But Both was to pay for his cheeky effort during the second stage of The Epic, a long but not overly steep climb up the mountain known as ‘Razorback’, because of its likeness to the arched back of a wild pig.
“I couldn’t see them when I did a u-turn at the first check, then Craig Gordon (Team Cannondale) passed me half way up the razorback,” Both said. “I Cracked on Edwards Gap and cramped the rest of the way home.”
But Both had plenty of company during his hours of suffering in the mountain spurs adjoining the Great Dividing Range. Murray Spink, the eventual race winner, was having a tough time in the early stages, with a combination of fatigue and gear failure.
“I was yo-yoing off the back of the bunch going into the single track, then hit some stick and opened my rear skewer and my wheel came out,” Spink said of his early mishap. “I stopped to fix that so I was about a minute down through the first check, then rode across the bunch on the climb before Gordo made a huge attack.”
Craig Gordon’s attack on the first big climb of the day had an immediate impact on the Epic field, as pretenders to the title were spat out the back, one after another.

For third place-getter Shaun Lewis, the ascent of the Razorback almost proved race-defining, but fortunately the Yeti-Powerbar rider had team-mates close by to come to his aid.
“I got dagged [sheep farmer terminology for dropped] on the razorback climb, then my team-mate Richard (Vollebregt) came across to me, then I got across to the main group again just before Laidley Gap,” Lewis told Cyclingnews.
Lewis managed to hold on over the short but steep Laidley Gap ascent, and was still in contention when the lead bunch reached the final small climb, nearing the finish line at Pepper’s Hidden Vale Resort.
“There was still four of us into the property here.. everyone’s hurting so you don’t know how much you’ve got left compared to them,” Lewis said. “But Murray (Spink) went well, very strong.”
An Epic adventure

In the Elite Women’s division, Queensland adventure racer Narelle Ash simply smoked her rivals, her Epic victory coming in a time of 5 hours and 2 minutes.
Smart choices in equipment selection surely played a key role in Ash’s result. The Gap Cycles rider opted for a dual suspension bike to flatten out the bumps on the lengthy single track descent near the race start.
“I just wanted to stay consistent,” a beaming Ash said while celebrating victory with her team-mates. “Now that I’ve got a dual suspension bike I found Ma Ma Creek much easier, because last year when I did it, I’d only been riding a mountain bike for four months.”
Finishing second didn’t seem to matter much at all to Ash’s team-mate Imogen Smith. Just like many of the male riders, Smith was singing the praises of the Ma Ma Creek single track, which forms part of Australia’s National Trail network.

“It was definitely an epic, best race of the year though,” the ever-smiling Smith told Cyclingnews. “The first section in the creek it’s so much fun, it’s really fun it’s smooth single track it feels great and it’s downhill just great to ride, you feel great."
Third place across the line in the Open Women’s event went to another adventure racer in Katrin van der Spiegel.
