Some of the coldest weather we have seen in Upper Hutt recently didnt dampen the spirits of the riders in the first round of the CB Richard Ellis Mountainbike series on Sunday.

One hundred and ten riders braved the St Pats Forest course where unmelted snow remained on the sides of the tracks from the day before's fall.

It had oganiser Marco Renalli wondering how many riders would have turned up if the weather had been better, as fields of this size have not been seen in local races for some time.

Levin's Jason Clement took the honours in the mens race from Upper Hutt rider Wayne Hiscock.

In the senior womens class Karina Wilkinson also from Levin won, although masters rider Catherine Dunne had a faster time.

Race 2 in the CB Richard Ellis series is being held at Dry Creek on September 19.
