Baestaens exploits pile-up

Belgian Vincent Baestaens profited from a crash in the twenty-man group behind him on an artificial bridge to win the race in Loenhout, Belgium. Pole Pawel Szczepaniak and German Marcel Meisen rounded out the top three on the cold, but sunny day near Antwerp.
"I attacked on one of the hills and they probably hesitated behind me because they don't know me well," Baestaens said before claiming this victory wasn't a surprise for him. "If I'm not having bad luck then I can get far."
Nobody started the chase of Baestaens and the Belgian easily held on for the win. Szczepaniak won the small bunch sprint for second place. Walsleben, leader in the U23 Gazet van Antwerpen Trophy, finished fifth and extended his lead in the overall classification over Belgians Kenneth Van Compernolle and Jim Aernouts.
"I slipped away and crashed in the first lap. In the end I kept my Kenneth and Jim behind me. I pulled for most of the last lap to keep them at distance. It's also the best position to avoid crashes," Meisen said.
While Walsleben managed to avoid a crash Danny Summerhill went down in that crucial final lap and finished seventeenth. The American had been sitting in the big group for most of the race before moving to the front with only three laps to go. He was leading this big group for a while but was then losing positions on the asphalt sections prior to the the crash.
About one hundred riders lined up at the start in Loenhout. A couple of riders crashed quite hard on the frozen course, taking out favourites like Joeri Adams and Boy Van Poppel.
