Wellens continues winning ways

Life is beautiful for Bart

Bart Wellens (Spaar Select) recorded his eighth victory of the season in round 2 of the Gazet van Antwerpen Trofee in Niel, Belgium. The World Champion beat Sven Nijs (Rabobank) and Ben Berden (John Saey-Deschacht) comfortably to increase his lead in the GvA Trofee.

"It was the intention to peak in this period," said Wellens. "Vossem was the beginning of the period which should last until Gavere in less than two weeks. After that I'll let go of the reins a bit, because if I'm riding like I am now I can't hold it for the whole season."

Wellens went out hard in the first lap, and only Sven Nijs and Ben Berden could close the gap - but only just. At the end of lap 2, Nijs and Berden were suffering as they tried to follow the pace of Wellens, and eventually they dropped back to a large group of chasers. Wellens increased his lead out to an unbeatable 45 seconds, managing to hold the chasers at bay until Nijs and Groenendaal mountain a counter-offensive together with Berden.

The trio could only get within 26 seconds of Wellens, with Nijs taking second place ahead of Berden and Groenendaal. But no-one was going to catch Wellens today.
