Glorious fall weather helped the Bay Area Super Prestige Series kick off their 5th season with nearly 450 competitors at Sierra Point in Brisbane. A landfill site near the edge of San Francisco Bay featured three short run-ups and a BMX-style ramp that created plenty of potential air time for the acrobatic. Temperatures in the low 70's helped fuel the Bar-B-Cue laden parking lots as local teams turned out for full days of racing.
Andy Jacques-Maynes led a 1-2 sweep of the men's A race with Cal Giant team-mate Justin Robinson. Early in the contest HRS/Rock Lobster's Josh Snead was the main contender until Robinson caught and from then on the Cal Giant Squeeze was in full force while the Lobster's still recorded four of the top 10 finishers on the warm afternoon. The "A" Women's contest saw a complete reversal with HRS/Rock Lobster's Sara Kerlin the runaway victor and Cal Giant's Josie Beggs a little less than a minute down in second place.

The Masters had a tremendous showing with former NorCal 'cross legends Clark Natwick, Jim Gentes, even Gary Fisher enjoying the atmosphere. Even 4-time National Champ Don Myrah made a return to competition – this time with a family cheering squad. Chris D'Alusio captured the 35+ Masters title and Steve Gile the 45+ victor.
One family will have to come to grips with sharing race glory. Both Thom Fox and his 14 year old son Bjorn took Round 1 victories and now they will have to decide who gets to display their new season Leader's jersey on the mantle at home.
Round 2 of the Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclecross Series continues in 2 weeks just a mile north of Brisbane next to the home of the San Francisco 49'ers football team. Another converted landfill Candlestick Point features similar terrain to Sierra Point but longer laps – and that should provide greater intervals in some of the crowded race classes.
