Wild wins historic Qatar gold, Bronzini doubles

The final stage of the first Ladies' Tour of Qatar ended in a nail-biting final kilometre that saw a solo attack by Team USA's Lauren Tamayo (neé Franges) caught in the last metres. Italy's Giorgia Bronzini sprinted to victory ahead of Rochelle Gilmore (Lotto-Belisol), while Kirsten Wild gave the Cervélo TestTeam women its first overall win of the season by finishing in third on the stage.
"It is a good development for the sport and for the women here. And it is good for Cervélo to win the first race of the season and say 'we are here,'" Wild said.
The 26-year-old Wild was just five seconds ahead of Bronzini coming into the final stage, and with two intermediate sprint bonuses gave herself enough margin to secure the overall win. A third place on the stage sealed the deal, giving Wild the honour of being the first rider on the palmares of the first women's race to be held in Qatar.
Bronzini timed her sprint perfectly, just as she had done to win the first stage. Tamayo escaped with five kilometres to go, opening up a lead of 28 seconds. As the teams wound up the sprint, Tamayo dangled tantalisingly close to taking the stage win until Ellen van Dijk (Columbia-Highroad) attacked as the line approached. Wild and Gilmore (Lotto-Belisol) marked the move with Bronzini in tow, shooting past Tamayo. Bronzini showed she is on strong form for the upcoming races on the track.
"Two stage wins confirms the form I have ahead of the track world championships – I am very happy. I am a little sorry I was not able to take the leader's jersey for the team," said Bronzini.
Wild won the overall with four seconds on Bronzini and 21 seconds on Kirsty Broun (Australia).
Riders started at the camel racetrack in Al Shahaniyah under warm sun with a slight breeze. The flag of kilometre zero dropped at 12:06.

The first hour of racing saw the first of two intermediate sprints and an average speed of a whopping 44.2km/h. Wild, leader by five seconds over Bronzini at the start of the day, gained three more at kilometre 30 with the sprint over Broun and Suzanne de Goede.
Teams Cervélo, USA and Italy were most active at the front of the group. Two notable escape attempts were made by Katharine Carroll (USA) – km 67 – and Marta Tagliaferro (Italy) – km 80.
The constant shuffling for control saw the field split into two at kilometre 74, but it came back together 10 kilometres later.
Flexpoint led the way to the final intermediate sprint (97km) and the finish. Wild took it over Bronzini and Broun to clinch her overall victory; all she had to do was to keep at the front of the group for the finish and the gold jersey would be hers.
"There was a lot of wind in the final kilometre," said Bronzini. "It was very technical and we were all lined out. At 500 metres, van Dijk tried. Wild closed the gap and the sprint started with me on Gilmore's wheel."
Wild's third place ensured she took the silver jersey of the points classification. Van Dijk kept the blue jersey of best young rider. She took the jersey on the first day of racing.
