Ronde van Overijssel - 1.2Netherlands, May 3, 20082007 Results Results Past winners Surprising win for the home teamBy Harry Ruiterkamp Dutch youngster Robin Chaigneau won the 56th edition of de Ronde van Overijssel, one of the oldest cycling classics in the Netherlands. In the streets of start and finish place Rijssen, after 201.3 km of racing, Chaigneau, the rider from 'home team' Asito-Löwik outsprinted countrymen Bobbie Traksel and Tom Veelers. "I am very delighted with this victory", said the 19-year old rider. "Especially because our team comes from this part of the country. I won an amateur classic last week, but did not expect to win today." After crashing in the U23 version of the Ronde van Vlaanderen the rider form Meerkerk won the Arno Wallaard Memorial in his hometown. "This race is rated much higher. And with a distance of over 200 kilometres it is much longer. I know I have a good sprint, but I did not know I could do this after such a distance. My advantage was that this sprint was slightly uphill so I could use my power. I decided to ride my own sprint at the left side of the road and was able to bring it home!" Traksel came in second after a successful week with two wins (1 Mei Prijs Hoboken and criterium in his home town Tiel). "I was satisfied with my ride today. I didn't feel to good, but my team decided to work for me anyway. Unfortunately, I came up short this time." Veelers also had to be satisfied with his third place. "I was beaten by a faster man today." How it unfoldedThe race began with an early attack by Dutchman Germ van den Burg (Ruiter Dakkapellen) and Skil-Shimano's Lin Jung from China. They gained a maximum advantage of 4.10 on the peloton in which Team 3c-Gruppe did most of the chasing. With 25 kilometres to two leaders were again swallowed up by the peloton. On the local circuits a leading group of five tried to escape. Dutchman Bram Schmitz (Van Vliet), Germans Matthias Friedemann and Paul Voss (Team 3c-Gruppe) Bjorn Glasner (Kuota) and the Dane Michael Tronborg (Designa Kokken) took a lead of 20 seconds, but when Friedemann and Tronborg were dropped, the peloton, lead by Team P3 Transfer - Batavus, brought the bunch back. In the final sprint Chaigneau showed his colleagues he was the fastest man of the day. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Harry Ruiterkamp
