Tour of Pennsylvania - 2.2USA, June 24-29, 20082007 results Stage List Preview Start List The Stages
2008 American Eagle Outfitters Tour of PennsylvaniaBy Kirsten Robbins The inaugural American Eagle Outfitters’ Tour of Pennsylvania, presented by Highmark Healthy High 5 will commence on Tuesday June 24 in Philadelphia showcasing 120 international cyclists under the age of 25. The seven-staged event is set to travel along the State’s southern border from east to west before entering Sunday’s grand finale in downtown Pittsburgh. The international start list will field riders from five continents including national teams from Germany, Argentina, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Netherlands and Russia. The two US professional espoir teams Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast and Time Pro Cycling will undoubtedly put on a show after experiencing early season success against the American professional squads. Finally, nine US elite amateur espoir teams are ready to add their strength to the bulk of the peloton such as Waste Management, Fiordifrutta, Sakonnet Technology, VMG-Felt and California Giant Berry are just a few that will experience success amongst the international field. The Tour of Pennsylvania not only provides challenging competition for the espoir category, but a snap shot of history for the foreign riders as the scheduled route follows the Forbes Trail. "This is the same route George Washington and John Forbes used 250 years ago," said Jerry Casale, chief operating officer of Tour of PA, LLC, the company hired by Pittsburgh 250 to run this first-year event. "Along the way we’ll pass through a lot of the places that were founded that same year - Bedford, Ligonier, Latrobe. They are all celebrating their 250th and that was a very important aspect of designing this course." Riders will start the tour with a double day in downtown Philadelphia with a 3.5 kilometre time trial followed by a 50 kilometer criterium and neither of which are expected to form significant separations on the general classification. However, the opening day will reveal the early leaders in both the overall GC and sprinter competitions. Stage two’s 146 kilometer race is expected to shake things a bit with the start of the KOM competition. The race will start in Downingtown, following HWY 30 and ending in Carlisle. A race of attrition will kick in during stage three’s 168 kilometres beginning in Camp Hill and head out toward Bedford where the riders must climb two mountain passes. Stage four’s 100 kilometre ‘queen stage’ will surely put pressure on the GC riders as the peloton will start at the base of the Allegheny Mountains in Bedford and pass two decisive climbs before descending onto the finishing streets in Latrobe. The peloton’s tired legs will be given a rest during stage five’s relatively flat 146-kilometre race beginning in Ligonier and ending in Pittsburgh, providing the sprinters with a chance to join the race. Downtown Pittsburgh will host the final stage six criterium, an 80 kilometer flat and fast circuit that will reveal the overall Tour of Pennsylvania winner.
