Valverde is the big cheese in Paris-Camembert

Spaniard Alejandro Valverde took home the big prize in the 69th edition of the Paris-Camembert Lepetit. The Caisse d'Epargne rider sprinted to victory ahead of Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom) and Benoît Vaugrenard (Française des Jeux) in the uphill finish, and was rewarded with a large wheel of the delicious, creamy soft cheese that is made in the region.
The 205 kilometre course was traversed at a high speed, nearly 45 kilometres per hour, thanks to a favourable wind and clear skies. After an early break of 13 was brought back by the Caisse d'Epargne and Bouygues Telecom teams, FdJ's Sandy Casar launched a promising attack on the mur des Champeaux with 10 kilometres to go, and built up a solid lead of nearly 20 seconds.
Casar, however, would be disappointed when he was caught within two kilometres from the line and then swamped in the uphill sprint, where Valverde powered to his second victory of the season after his win in the Tour of Murcia. The win confirmed the form of the Spaniard, who will look to improve on his second place finishes in the 2007 Liège - Bastogne - Liège and La Flèche Wallonne in the coming weeks.
