The Tour of Aragon (Spain, cat 2.4) began today (April 17). The stage was won by Rosario Fina (It, Gewiss-Playbus) won the first stage of theTour of from fellow breakaways Herminio Diaz Zabala (Sp, ONCE) and Angel Edo (Sp, Kelme-Artiach). Mario Cipollini (it, Saeco) took fourth place at 7 seconds in the peloton sprint.

Report on Stage One

The peloton split into three groups on the last climb of the day, a cat 2, 40km from the finish. Miguel Indurain was active at the head of the first group as were Tony Rominger, Melchor Mauri and Matiano Rojas; Laurent Jalabert was in the third group. The first two groups came together 15km from the finish. Shortly before three riders had broken clear -- Rosario Fina, Herminio Diaz Zabala and Angel Edo. The bunch was on the point of catching these in the last 5km when Fina slipped clear to take his first pro victory at 27. Laurent Jalabert won the sprint out of the third peloton.

Stage 2 Barbastro--Cerler 176km, April 18

Aitor Garmendia (Sp, ONCE) won the second stage of the Tour of Aragon, which crossed five cols, culminating in a summit finish. Second was Miguel Indurain (Sp, Banesto) and third Melchor Mauri (Sp, ONCE). Garmendia took over the overall lead, with Indurain second at 6 seconds and Mauri third at 8 seconds.
