Dan Kullgren wins 08XC marathon

By Pär Edgren

Dan Kullgren (CK Filip) won the inagural mtb race 08XC mountain bike marathon on Saturday.

The Swedish MTB champion succeeded in his goal of winning win his last race ever, the 120 km 08XC MTB marathon between Arlanda airport and the Olympic Arena in Stockholm.

The course vas very soft due to heavy rain during the week before the race but despite this three riders came through the 'marathongate' at the Stadium at the same time. Those three were Philip Tavell, Dan Kullgren and Erik Jungåker. When Philip Tavell mistakenly turned to the left (the finish line was to the right) Kullgren started the sprint and held off Erik Jungåker to the finish line.

"This was one of my life's most joyful wins" declared Kullgren after the race and added,"It's also my last race. I'm 31 years old and this is a good opportunity to start doing something else."

Maria Östergren was outstanding among the women and won by a margin of 17 minutes. Second was Anna Enocssson and third was Annica Jonsson, ten times Swedish Champ, who has almost stoped racing this year.

"The pace was high today and I got inspired by being placed so high up in the field among the men," said Östergren after the race.

Behind the elite racers more than 1,400 mountain bikers fought it out to the finish line at the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm. It's not often a mtb-race has such a classic surrounding for its finish.
